Salmon: Culture, River and Trails
Accommodation in Salmon
Salmon brings together cultural and historical themes, trails, river activities and a seasonal farmers market. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering the different highlights separately: some information relates to downtown Salmon, while other details concern Salmon River Country or the surrounding area. This way, you can choose the themes that suit your stay without, for example, conflating a museum visit with an activity on the water.
Culture and History of the Region
The Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural & Educational Center shares information about Sacajawea, her affiliation with the Agaidika (Salmon Eater) Shoshone-Bannock Tribes and her role in the Corps of Discovery. The center is located in the Lemhi River Valley between the Salmon River and the Beaverhead Mountains. Two trails at the center are open year-round from morning until evening.
The museums also have their own distinct focuses. The Lemhi County Historical Society and Museum houses the largest surviving collection of Agaidika (Salmon Eater) Shoshone artifacts on display. The Lemhi County Museum in Salmon exhibits and interprets the rich history of the region. If you’re interested in the area’s past, these institutions offer different points of connection: Sacajawea’s story and Agaidika culture are in view, as is the broader regional history.
Downtown, Main Street and the Salmon River
Historic Main Street in downtown Salmon is lined with local shops and boutiques. Individual shops may change. The Lemhi County Farmers Market takes place every Saturday from June through September at Veteran’s Memorial Park in downtown. It offers seasonal fresh vegetables and fruit from local farmers in Lemhi and Salmon Valley. The market also features locally made goods such as hand-spun yarn, handmade knives and custom jewelry. Selection may vary by season and vendor; check the dates for the relevant year before your trip.
Island Park is a landmass that divides the Salmon River. The park is located in downtown Salmon and offers a network of trails and boat ramps for river access. Salmon City Park has a children’s playground. These places add opportunities to explore trails and river access in town alongside the cultural highlights, without implying that they are the same facilities or activities.
Trails and Outdoor Activities
Discovery Hill offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, dirt biking and disc golf, as well as a 1.6-mile Podcast Trail. Discovery Hill’s non-motorized trail network is one mile from downtown Salmon. Visitors to the area can also explore sections of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail on foot. The information about Discovery Hill and the historic long-distance trail describes different opportunities for activities on foot or by bike; it should not be read as a description of a single, continuous trail.
You can also ride a bike on the trails and roads in Salmon, Idaho. Road cycling events take place in Salmon during the season. Check the dates of specific events before your trip. In winter, skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing are possible in Salmon. The activities described therefore range from cycling and hiking to winter sports; which ones are right for you depends on which of these themes you want to include in your trip planning.
River Activities and Seasonal Planning
Fishing is possible in Salmon River Country almost year-round. Guided fishing trips are also available on the same day; ask about availability for your preferred date. The Salmon River and its tributaries also offer rafting, kayaking, canoeing and jet boating. These activities relate to the river and its tributaries, making them a different focus from the trails downtown or at Discovery Hill.
The seasonal farmers market and road cycling events also provide specific timing considerations for trip planning. While the market is regularly held on Saturdays from June through September, the cycling events take place during the season. Check the current dates for each before planning your trip around them. This makes it possible to organize cultural visits, trails and outdoor activities by their respective locations and seasons.
