Lewis County: Discover History, Art, and Landscapes
Accommodation in Lewis County
Lewis County offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip: Nez Perce history, sites along the Lewis and Clark Expedition route, museums, art projects, and the landscapes of the Camas Prairie. Each destination has a different focus: some tell stories of historic stays, others preserve regional memories or invite you to take part.
Exploring the Outdoors and Historic Sites
At Heart of the Monster, you can hike and picnic. There is no admission fee, and no reservation or National Park Service permit is required. The site is open daily year-round from sunrise to sunset. Still, check for notices about temporary closures before you travel.
Lewis and Clark Long Camp is the site of a Nez Perce encampment where Lewis and Clark spent the winter of 1805–06. Markers and interpretive signs are located at a pullout on U.S. Highway 12, about a mile east of Kamiah. Another historical reference is the four weeks from May 14 to June 10, when the expedition lived among the Nez Perce near present-day Kamiah. This makes it possible to distinguish the winter camp from this other period of the expedition.
The Asa Smith Mission was established in the Kamiah area in April 1839; the Smiths left the area in 1841. The mission itself is on private property and is not open to the public. A historical marker about the mission is located on U.S. Highway 12, about a mile east of Kamiah. Check access information before traveling there.
Museums and Art in the Region
The Winchester Museum was established in 1966 after the Craig Mountain Lumber Company closed its sawmill. Its exhibits include the Camas Prairie Railroad; individual displays may change. If you want to see this particular exhibit, check whether it is currently on display before your visit. The Nezperce Museum & Historical Society has a different focus: it preserves the history of the Nezperce Prairie through artifacts, photographs, family stories, and mementos.
In Kamiah, the Kamiah Historical Society and Museum preserves mammoth bones found on the outskirts of town, on Sig Grove's property. The museum's address is 518 Main Street; check visitor arrangements before your visit. River Arts in Kamiah offers free classes and open, hands-on projects. The region's cultural offerings thus range from historical collections and exhibits to opportunities to get creative yourself.
Landscapes and Events
Winchester Lake State Park is a small, wooded oasis in the heart of the Camas Prairie. Its natural setting offers a contrast to the historical themes of the museums and Lewis and Clark sites. Nezperce Prairie Day takes place annually on the second Friday and Saturday in July. Since the exact dates can vary from year to year, check the dates for your travel year if the event is important to your plans.
When choosing destinations, you can follow your own interests: the historical timeline of the expedition, the different museum themes, hands-on art projects, or the landscapes of the Camas Prairie. If you have a specific event date in mind, the July dates are key; for the Asa Smith Mission, keep in mind that the mission property is not open to the public. This helps you tailor your travel plans to the topics and visitor conditions that are actually right for you.
