Evanston combines experiences on Lake Michigan with rail connections to Chicago and attractions related to history, nature, and art. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can plan around your own priorities: Is getting around your main concern, or do you want to spend time on the lakefront or visit for a specific event or date? Transit stops and seasonal offerings are just as relevant as the places you want to visit.

Transit connections for planning your trip

The Metra Union Pacific North (UP-N) line stops in Evanston at Main, Davis, and Central stations and connects Chicago’s northern suburbs with downtown Chicago. The CTA Purple Line elevated train serves seven stations in Evanston: Central, Noyes, Foster, Davis, Dempster, Main, and South Boulevard. It runs from early morning until late evening; schedules may change. Metra, CTA, and Pace also serve the city. When planning your trip, compare the specific station with your destinations and your accommodation’s address. If a particular departure is important, check the current schedule.

Lake Michigan, beaches, and nature

The Lake Michigan shoreline offers miles of scenic trails, sandy beaches, and views in Evanston. At the lakefront, you can swim, walk, picnic, or watch the sunrise. Evanston has six beaches: Clark Street Beach, Greenwood Street Beach, Lee Street Beach, Lighthouse Beach, South Boulevard Beach, and Lincoln Street Beach. Lincoln Street Beach is operated by Northwestern University.

Ladd Arboretum also brings together different aspects of the outdoors: it includes a bird sanctuary, sculptures, and a bike path. The Evanston Ecology Center has a nature classroom with live animal exhibits and nature-related educational programs. So, in addition to the shoreline, nature and art are also part of what the city has to offer.

Water sports and seasonal offerings

The Dempster Street Launch Facility is used to launch, retrieve, and store non-motorized watercraft. These include small sailboats, catamarans, windsurfing boards, canoes, stand-up paddleboards, and kayaks. This is separate from hourly rentals offered by the Recreation Division: during the swimming season, it rents Barnett 1400 sailboats, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards. If you’re planning to use a particular offering, check its seasonal availability in advance.

History, art, and event dates

Exhibitions and self-guided house tours are offered at the Dawes House from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. One-hour guided tours take place at 1, 2, and 3 p.m. Since opening hours may change, it’s a good idea to check them before your visit.

Evanston Made takes place annually in June. Studios, galleries, museums, workshops, and shops showcase work by Evanston creatives and host events; dates and participating venues may vary. Ten Thousand Ripples (TTR), a public art and peace project, is also among the city’s artistic offerings.

Another annual event is the Arboretum Egg Hunt at Ladd Arboretum. The program includes entertainment, games, face painting, and arts and crafts stations. Since dates and programming may vary, check the details before your visit. This lets you distinguish between enduring features such as the lakefront and nature and events held at specific times when planning your trip.
