Northbrook, Illinois, offers several distinct ways to plan a stay: local history, cycling, and nature and hiking trails. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your days around whether you’re most interested in a historical perspective, a short outdoor walk or a longer outing. Events also provide specific dates throughout the year.

Local History and Guided Tours

The Northbrook History Museum is located in the former Northfield Inn at 1776 Walters Avenue in Northbrook, Illinois. Its upper floor is designed as a recreated Shermerville home from 1890 to 1910. The museum thus combines a specific historic building with a portrayal of domestic life during a clearly defined period.

The Northbrook Historical Society’s Walking Tours program offers another perspective on local history. The tours pass through downtown Northbrook’s business district, along Shermer Road, and west beyond the railroad tracks. The program is available to groups. This lets you choose between the museum’s historic building and a guided exploration of different parts of the area.

Cycling, Nature and Trails

The Ed Rudolph Velodrome is a major cycling attraction in Northbrook. It is owned and managed by the Northbrook Park District. Cycling is therefore a distinct point of interest for a stay, alongside opportunities for walks and nature-related activities.

The River Trail Nature Center features free exhibits and on-site naturalists. The grounds also have three hiking trails. The Des Plaines River Trail System also extends into Northbrook and offers options ranging from short walks to full-day outings. This range helps with planning your time: a short loop and a full-day outing are different plans.

Techny Prairie Park and Fields has more than two miles of trails, including a 5K loop that connects to a trail system in Meadowhill Park. The Trail Through Time offers another way to enjoy nature: it includes a restored prairie and two wetlands that provide habitat for mammals, birds and insects.

Events Throughout the Year

The Shermerfest fall festival was first held in 1979. It typically takes place on the third Sunday in September at the Village Green in downtown Northbrook. The Liberty Loop 5k Run and the Liberty Lap Fun Run are held annually on July 4 at Techny Prairie Park and Fields. The events therefore differ both in occasion and typical timing: Shermerfest is a fall festival, while the two races are associated with July 4.

If you’d like to plan your stay around one of these dates, check the event details for the relevant year. For the races, pay particular attention to registration and the schedule.
