Effingham: Nature, Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Effingham
Effingham offers a range of ways to shape a trip: public trails and natural areas, historic sites, museums and events. When planning, consider whether you’d like to spend most of your time outdoors or focus on culture and entertainment. Each destination has its own distinct features and can help you tailor your stay to your interests.
Nature and trails around Effingham
Ballard Nature Center is a land-and-water reserve in Effingham County. Its habitats include floodplain forests and upland forests; at least 24 species of reptiles and amphibians have been recorded there. The nature center’s trails vary in length. The visitor center has an exhibit hall, a children’s area and a bird-watching area. This makes it possible to focus on nature observation or a visit to the exhibits.
The TREC trail network is open to the public and suitable for walking, running, cycling and roller skating. A pedestrian bridge over Interstate 57/70 connects it to the City of Effingham’s bike trail network. Much of the trail network is accessible. When choosing trails, you can take into account both the activities mentioned and the range of trail lengths at Ballard Nature Center, without treating the two offerings as the same.
Rock Cave Land and Water Reserve is characterized by upland forests, ravine forests, sandstone outcrops, rock formations, and streams that flow year-round or intermittently. Hiking, bird-watching and nature observation are permitted there. The differences between the areas can help with planning: habitats and recorded species are part of Ballard Nature Center’s nature profile, while Rock Cave offers a varied landscape of forest, rock and waterways. Check conditions before visiting Rock Cave Land and Water Reserve.
Lake Sara and recreational activities
Lake Sara lies west of Effingham. It covers 800 acres and has 27 miles of shoreline. Fishing is available at the lake, which also has a public beach. The lake combines a distinctive natural setting with activities on the water. As beach conditions can change, check them before your visit.
For swimming, there’s the seasonal Kluthe Memorial Pool. Its facilities include slides for all ages, a zero-entry children’s pool with a play area, and a competition-size pool. Check current operating conditions before planning your visit. Harmony Playground is an inclusive playground with a pavilion on the northwest side of Evergreen Hollow Park. The pool and playground offer different experiences: one has several pools and slides, while the other is described as an inclusive playground.
History, collections and performances
The Teutopolis Monastery Museum includes a Franciscan mausoleum, considered the only one of its kind in the Midwest. Effingham County Courthouse houses a museum with military exhibits and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are two distinct features: the museum in the courthouse and the building’s listing as a historic site. The Cross at the Crossroads grounds include a visitor center, a chapel and a depiction of the Ten Commandments.
Collections and tours also offer distinct themes. My Garage Museum displays rare and collectible Corvettes and Volkswagens. Tours and demonstrations in the John Boos & Co. showroom are available by request. Keep this request requirement in mind when planning a visit.
National, regional and local artists perform at Effingham Performance Center. More than 30 performances are held there each year, and the venue has 1,523 seats. These figures give a concrete sense of the events on offer and the size of the auditorium. If you’re traveling for a particular performance, check the dates in advance.
Festivals, markets and food
Moccasin Creek Festival is an annual three-day music festival at Lake Sara in Summit Township, west of Effingham. The Effingham Artisan Fair features handmade goods from more than 30 vendors; the number may vary by edition. The EffingHAM-JAM BBQ Cook-off features barbecue, live music, and food and beverage vendors; the program may also change from one edition to another. If you’re traveling for a festival or event, include its dates and program in your plans.
For a different kind of outing, Tuscan Hills Winery offers wine tastings. The mix of nature destinations, historical themes, performances and events provides different ways to shape your trip. Choose the activities that suit your stay, then look for a hotel in Effingham for your trip.
