Discover Galena: History and Architecture
Accommodation in Galena
If you’re interested in local history and architecture, Galena offers several different ways to explore them. Its historic character is evident in a large portion of its building stock, the Old Market House, and a self-guided Historic Walking Tour. Exhibits and collections at the Old Market House offer a different way to explore the city’s history than the self-guided Galena Historic Walking Tour. The hills and valleys around the city are also part of the destination’s character. This makes it possible to experience Galena through both its built heritage and the surrounding landscape.
Historic Architecture and Local History
Galena’s historic character can be viewed at two different scales. Almost 62 percent of Galena’s buildings are located in a Historic District listed on the National Register; this gives you an idea of the extent of its historic building stock. The John Dowling House is in Galena’s Downtown Historic District; check current visitor information before planning a visit. The Old Market House offers a closer look at a single building: the City of Galena built it in 1845–1846, and it served as the city market for 65 years. This lets you compare the historic character of the building stock with the history of this individual building.
Exhibits and Collections at the Old Market House
Visitors can see an exhibit about Ulysses S. Grant at the Old Market House, featuring more than 1,500 artifacts. Many belonged to Grant and his family. The first floor also houses collections about Grant and the Civil War. Interpreters explain the building’s history and architecture. The provenance of many artifacts gives the Grant exhibit a personal connection, while the Civil War collections broaden its historical scope. Since opening days and visitor hours vary by season, check the current schedule before planning your visit.
Architectural Styles and Early Settlement
The Galena Historic Walking Tour offers a different perspective on the past. The self-guided Galena Historic Walking Tour tells the story of the people who first settled the steeply sloping terrain; its themes also include the variety of 19th-century architectural styles.
At the U. S. Grant Home, tours are led by interpreters, while the Galena Historic Walking Tour is self-guided. The ground floor of the U. S. Grant Home is accessible to people with disabilities.
Hills, Valleys, and the Character of Galena
The hills and valleys surrounding Galena offer scenic beauty and a sense of being untouched by time. This is a different way to experience the area than through its historic buildings and collections: one focuses on the landscape, the other on architectural and local history.
