Accommodation in Elgin
When looking for a hotel in Elgin, it helps to consider the different things to see and do: the city offers historic architecture, museums and green spaces with a variety of trails and landscapes. Rail connections may also play a role in your plans. First, consider whether you’d like your stay to focus mainly on culture, nature or both.
History and Architecture
The Elgin Area Historical Society is housed in Old Main, which dates back to 1856. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Permanent exhibits include materials on the Elgin National Watch Company, the E. Maude and Carl Parlasca Native American Collection, and memorabilia from the Elgin Road Race. Some presentations may change.
Residential architecture is also part of the city’s history: the Elgin Historic District comprises a notable collection of homes from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The Spring / Douglas Historic District in northern Elgin, on the east bank of the Fox River, covers a different scale. It extends across twelve blocks along both sides of Spring Street and Douglas Avenue. These two districts offer different perspectives on Elgin’s historic buildings.
Museums and Culture
The Elgin Public Museum offers exhibits and educational programs on natural history and cultural topics. Its offerings are aimed, among others, at families, school groups, Scouts, clubs, organizations and homeschooling groups, as well as anyone who enjoys learning. Depending on your interests, a museum visit can be paired with a look at nature or cultural topics.
The Hemmens Cultural Center, a venue for arts and entertainment, is located on the Fox River in Elgin’s Civic Center. An interactive map shows individual locations of artworks in the walkable downtown area. Along with the museums, it also points you to visual art throughout the city.
Parks and Trails Along the Fox River
Lords Park is a 108-acre regional park with mature hickory and oak trees in rolling terrain. At Lords Park Zoo, visitors can see bison, elk and white-tailed deer year-round. Nature and wildlife viewing are two distinct features of the same park.
The Fox River Bike Path runs along the riverfront in Trout Park. The park has been designated an Illinois Nature Preserve since 1972. For a different trail length, Hawthorne Hill Nature Center offers loop trails of about two miles. Elgin is also one of the communities along the 35-mile paved Fox River Trail.
Another green space with its own character is Foundry Park: this linear park sits on the west bank of the Fox River downtown and features a small fountain and a sculpture. Together with the trails and regional park, it complements the museum and architecture themes with different kinds of open space in Elgin.
Planning Your Trip and Stay
Elgin has three separate Metra stations. Rail service connects the community from the northern Fox Valley to Chicago Union Station. Since rail service details can change, check the current schedule before traveling. When planning your overnight stay, you can use the cultural and nature attractions mentioned above as a guide, without assuming a particular route or length of visit.
