Hampshire
Accommodation in Hampshire
Hampshire combines local history, from the stagecoach route to the railroad, with landscapes and trails in Hampshire Forest Preserve. Seasonal activities, public programs, and getting there are also part of planning your trip.
History and Local Development
Hampshire was founded under the name Henpeck along the Chicago–Galena Stagecoach Trail. In 1876, the town was moved so it would be located on the Chicago-Pacific Railroad line. The two locations mark different stages in the town’s development: first its connection to the Stagecoach Trail, then its location on a railroad line. The year 1876 was a specific turning point, as the move brought Hampshire to the railroad line.
The Hampshire Township Historical Society was founded as a nonprofit organization in 2001. It is dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of Hampshire, Illinois, and Hampshire Township. The Society offers free public programs at the Township Building, 170 Mill Ave., at 7 p.m. Programs and dates may change.
Landscapes and Trails in Hampshire Forest Preserve
An oak-hickory forest sits atop a glacial moraine ridge. Prairie and prairie wetlands lie along the gentle slopes and below. The preserve thus brings wooded high ground together with open and wetland landscapes.
Hampshire Forest Preserve has twelve miles of trails for hiking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding. These activities offer different ways to enjoy the trails. Trail conditions and possible closures may vary; check conditions before making plans.
Flight Experiences and Winter Activities
Sky Soaring offers sightseeing flights lasting about 25 minutes. You are towed in a glider with an FAA-certified commercial pilot to an altitude of 4,000 feet above mean sea level. You then glide back to the Sky Soaring airfield; during the flight, you can enjoy views of the Hampshire landscape in every direction. Sightseeing flights are offered seasonally and are weather dependent. Check availability before your trip.
Snowmobiling in Hampshire Forest Preserve is subject to a clear restriction: it is allowed only on the internal trails. Weather, snow depth, frozen ground, and marked trails should all be taken into account. Ice fishing is allowed at Hampshire South Forest Preserve; the activity is seasonal and subject to weather conditions and preserve regulations. The two winter activities therefore differ both in where they are allowed and in the conditions that apply.
Seasonal Offerings and Parks
Hampshire has a farmers market from late spring through early fall. As this is a seasonal offering, dates may change.
Bruce Ream Park has a playground, a splash pad, a shared-use trail with fitness stations, a sand volleyball court, a sledding or practice hill, and several courts and playing fields. The amenities bring together play, exercise, and sports in one park. As park amenities may change over time, it is a good idea to check the details before your visit.
Getting There and Getting Around
Hampshire offers direct access to the I-90 corridor. Check road conditions separately when planning a specific drive. The town is located between O’Hare and Rockford International airports and the Big Timber Metra station. If you plan to take Metra during your trip, check the schedule, as transit timetables may change.
