When planning a trip to Mount Zion, you can choose among three distinct areas of focus: nature and birdlife at Spitler Woods, the amenities at Fletcher Park, and the Mt. Zion Trail as a hiking and biking route. First consider whether you want to focus on an old-growth forest, a trail, or several amenities in one park.

Forest and Birdlife at Spitler Woods

Spitler Woods State Natural Area covers 200 acres in Mount Zion in Macon County and is home to one of the largest contiguous areas of old-growth forest in central Illinois. For nature enthusiasts, this offers a distinctive destination: old-growth forest in a large, contiguous area.

Spitler Woods provides habitat for songbirds, including yellow-billed cuckoos, gray catbirds, eastern wood pewees, and red-bellied woodpeckers. Alongside the forest, specific bird species are another nature-related draw. If you want to plan your stay around forests and birdlife, you can consider both aspects in the same area.

Amenities at Fletcher Park

Fletcher Park covers 24 acres and is located on the south side of Mount Zion next to Mt. Zion Intermediate School. This location description provides a specific point of reference within the town; the park’s amenities range from water-based and recreational activities to a structural feature.

The Splash Pad features spray jets, misters, and a tipping bucket and is intended for users of all ages and abilities. An undated seasonal schedule lists Memorial Day through Labor Day and daily hours of 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. CST; operation is weather-dependent. Check current operating hours before your visit.

The pond is stocked with fish and is open for fishing; a fishing license is required. Since fishing and licensing rules can change, check the applicable regulations and requirements before fishing. For planning purposes, it is important to distinguish between the two water-based offerings: the Splash Pad is intended for users of all ages and abilities, while fishing at the pond requires a fishing license.

Fletcher Park also includes a one-room schoolhouse.

The Mt. Zion Trail

The Mt. Zion Trail is a 2.7-mile hiking and biking route. It runs from the west side of Mount Zion at Southbooke Drive to the east side of Mount Zion at Spitler Woods State Park. Pedestrians, cyclists, strollers, and wheelchair users are welcome on the trail.

Compared with the amenities at Fletcher Park, the focus here is a named route with two endpoints. Its length, course, and welcome user groups offer different points of reference for your planning. Since route details can change, check the route before setting out.
