When planning a trip to Hancock County, you can choose among different highlights: cultural history, outdoor trails, and events. In Greenfield, James Whitcomb Riley’s legacy and railroad history come together in specific places and activities. You can plan your stay around whether you want to visit cultural sites, enjoy outdoor recreation, or attend an event.

Riley Heritage and Historic Sites

The James Whitcomb Riley Boyhood Home and Museum offers insights into Riley’s life and poetry through a pioneer-era homestead and family belongings. His life story and poetic work are equally central here. In Greenfield, the Hancock County Historical Society also operates the Old Log Jail Museum and the Chapel in the Park Museum. These two museums complement the focus on Riley with additional historic sites.

The Jane Ross Reeves Octagon House is open by appointment only; tours for small or large groups can be arranged in advance. If you plan to visit, you will need to make a prior inquiry.

Trails, Parks, and Recreation

The Pennsy Trail in Greenfield is a 5.6-mile rail-trail along a former section of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The Greenfield section is paved and designed for multiple uses. It has parking, drinking fountains, accessible restrooms, and exercise equipment. The trail highlights both the former railroad route and its present-day use for outdoor recreation.

The planned Riley Arts Trail is a complementary project: it is envisioned as a 0.7-mile concrete loop for multiple uses in downtown Greenfield, connecting the Pennsy Trail with cultural landmarks, shops, and restaurants. James Whitcomb Riley’s poems are to be incorporated into the concrete, and seven panels on Greenfield’s cultural history are also planned. Unlike the Pennsy Trail, the Riley Arts Trail is a planned project.

At Depot Street Park, railroad-themed swings and picnic tables made from rolling train-car wheels reflect Greenfield’s railroad history. The park also has a double amphitheater used for concerts and events. Brandywine Park offers opportunities for birdwatching. The Riley Park Pump Track is open to everyone, regardless of skill level. The options range from railroad themes and events to birdwatching and a sports facility.

Rover’s Run Bark Park is a two-acre dog park accessible to members only. One 1.5-acre area is open to all dogs, while another 0.5-acre area is designated for dogs under 25 pounds. Since membership requirements may change, check the current rules before visiting.

Lark Ranch Greenfield is located in Hancock County near Interstate 70. Attractions include pumpkin picking, corn mazes, rides, a one-mile railway, hayrides, Highland cattle, giant slides, and bounce pillows. This outing is quite different from the historic sites and outdoor trails.

Events Throughout the Year

The Riley Festival celebrates the life and legacy of James Whitcomb Riley. This four-day celebration in October features local art, crafts, music, food, parades, and family activities. The Pennsy Trail Art Fair and Music Festival focuses on art and music: the event takes place in the square behind the Hancock County Courthouse and on the adjacent streets in Greenfield. It includes more than 50 art vendors, several musical acts, food trucks, and a duck-race raffle. Dates and programs vary from year to year, so check current event information before traveling.
