Plainfield combines Quaker history with a variety of trails and Splash Island, a seasonal water park. When planning your visit, you can choose between historical sites, woodland paths, and paved trails. This lets you focus your stay on local history, trail character, or seasonal recreation.

Quaker History in Plainfield

Quaker history in Plainfield is reflected in several institutions. Annual meetings of the Religious Society of Friends began at the site of the Western Yearly Meetinghouse in 1858. The Depository was built in 1873 to preserve Quaker records. From 1881 to 1919, Friends Central Academy served as a secondary school. The timeline spans the start of the annual meetings in 1858, the Depository built in 1873, and the Academy's school years from 1881 to 1919; together, these sites represent gathering, preservation, and education.

Trails and Paths

Echo Hollow Nature Park is within Plainfield's city limits. More than five miles of trails wind through the woods, with gravel or natural surfaces. As of April 20, 2024, the length of accessible trails was 5.1 miles, following an expansion that added 1.6 miles.

The 8.7-mile Plainfield section of the Vandalia Trail is paved and operated by Plainfield Parks & Recreation. The trail is mostly flat and linear rather than a loop. It connects residential areas and parks, including Franklin Park, and has little automobile traffic.

The paved White Lick Creek Trail begins at the Richard A. Carlucci Recreation & Aquatic Center in Plainfield and heads south along White Lick Creek to Hummel Park. The trail offers hikers, cyclists, and walkers views of the creek. It also connects to the Al & Jan Barker Sports Complex, Anderson Park, and Friendship Gardens Park. At Friendship Gardens, it crosses the creek over an old iron truss bridge that was relocated from southern Guilford Township.

Trail surface and route are two different criteria when choosing a path: Echo Hollow offers woodland trails with gravel or natural surfaces, while the Vandalia Trail and White Lick Creek Trail are paved. The Vandalia Trail's defining features are its linear, mostly flat route; the White Lick Creek Trail heads south along the creek to Hummel Park.

Downtown and Seasonal Attractions

Downtown can also be part of your itinerary: the Plainfield Chamber Farmers' Market is located there.

Splash Island Family Waterpark is a 4.5-acre, Caribbean-themed outdoor water park in Plainfield. It is open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend and features three water slides, a 900-foot lazy river, and an interactive play area for children. Check the seasonal schedule before your trip if Splash Island is part of your plans.
