Portland: History, Parks and Events
Accommodation in Portland
Portland offers several distinct themes to consider when planning a stay: historic landmarks, regional history, events and outdoor activities. The Bowstring Truss Bridge and Floral Hall offer insights into the area’s architectural history; parks and trails provide a different focus. The timing of your trip may also matter, as some events are seasonal.
Bridge and Historic Buildings
The Bowstring Truss Bridge crosses the Salamonia River in Portland and is Indiana’s only concrete bowstring truss bridge. It was built in 1914 by the Isaac E. Smith construction company of Wayne County and designed by Portland civil engineer O. O. Clayton. The bridge is included in the National Register of Historic Places listing for the central business district.
In downtown Portland, a recently restored area comprising historically significant buildings spans five blocks and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. Floral Hall dates to 1891 and is also listed in the National Register. The bridge, business district and Floral Hall therefore offer three distinct historical points of interest in Portland.
Museum and Events
The Jay County Historical Museum houses thousands of artifacts dating back to 1838. Museum open houses are often held on Sundays. Check the museum’s website or Facebook page ahead of time to see whether open houses are currently being offered.
The Jay County Heritage Festival is held annually in early fall on the museum grounds. If you’re planning a trip around the festival, the current event dates are important. Check them before your trip.
The Jay County Fair also offers a full program of events, including midway rides, demolition derbies, a truck and tractor pull, a classic car parade and entertainment featuring nationally known performers.
The Jay County Civic Theatre offers live performances, educational and professional opportunities, and workshops to develop acting skills. Its theater entertainment reaches beyond Portland to all of Jay County, and the organization has been active for more than 30 years.
Parks, Trails and Water Park
Hudson Family Park features a lake, walking trails, a large playground and an amphitheater. Arts in the Park events are held there in summer. This program adds a seasonal event highlight to the park’s year-round offerings; check the current schedule before your trip.
The Hudson Park Trail of Trees is a one-mile walking trail in Hudson Park in Portland. Another way to get active is the Jay County Hospital Wellness Walkway, a paved trail intended for pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles. The front section is a quarter-mile long, while the back section is half a mile long—twice as long as the front section.
Portland Water Park is a family-friendly public water park with a beach entry, lazy river, large water slides and lily pads. For the 2026 operating season, regular hours are listed as noon to 8 p.m. Sunday through Friday and noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Check the hours before your visit.
Seasonal and weekly highlights differ when choosing your travel dates: Arts in the Park takes place in summer, the Heritage Festival in early fall, and museum open houses are often held on Sundays. Before your trip, check the current festival dates, summer schedule, museum information and water park hours. That way, you can plan your stay around the activities that matter most to you.
