Discover Culver: Parks, History, and Art
Accommodation in Culver
Culver brings together a range of interests: views of Lake Maxinkuckee, historic sites, art, local businesses, and events.
Park, Lake, and Trails
The Culver Park Department grounds offer views of Lake Maxinkuckee. Culver Park also includes a historic railroad depot. The lake is also the focus of a ten-mile bike ride around it.
The Historic Culver Walking Tour offers another way to get to know Culver. It is about one and a quarter miles long, starts and ends at the lighthouse in the town park, and focuses on historic sites and architecture. Compared with the bike ride around the lake, it is considerably shorter and has a different focus: here, places and architecture take center stage, while the bike route goes around the lake. This lets you choose based on route length, mode of transportation, and interests, without treating the two tours as equivalent routes.
History, Art, and Performances
The Culver Historical Society operates Heritage Park. The Culver Academies Museum displays rare artifacts from the early years of the Culver Military Academy, along with early uniforms and other clothing. This means that historic sites at Heritage Park sit alongside objects connected with the history of the academy.
The Crisp Visual Art Center has three galleries and houses the Culver Art Collection. Its focus is on visual art; the museum offers a different perspective on history through artifacts and clothing. Dance, music, and theater performances are held at the Eugene C. Eppley Auditorium at Culver Academies. Event dates may change if you are planning to visit for a particular performance.
Market, Ceramics, and Events
The Culver Farmers’ Market offers a diverse range of goods from farmers, craftspeople, artists, bakers, chefs, and gardeners. The variety of vendors makes the market relevant to culinary as well as craft and art interests. Art Awakened by Suzi Q offers a different, hands-on way to engage with art: the ceramics painting studio in Culver welcomes visitors without an appointment. Hours and workshops may change, so check them if you are planning a visit or workshop.
Culver Lakefest is a longstanding annual tradition and a three-day weekend event at Culver Park. If Lakefest is a key factor in your trip, check the current event date when planning. This lets you consider a potential event visit as a specific reason for your trip, without limiting other things to do in Culver to an event weekend.
Plan Water Activities
You can rent paddleboard equipment from Culver Marina or the Culver Park Department. This gives you different options for planning: a bike ride around the lake, a historic walking tour, or paddleboard equipment for rent. Which one suits your stay depends on whether you want to focus on a route, architecture and history, or a paddleboarding activity.
