Accommodation in Lester
Lester combines early town history with a memorial and community events throughout the year. If you’re looking for a hotel in Lester, consider whether you want to plan your stay around a particular day of remembrance or festival, or focus on the town’s history. This lets you consider historical connections separately from time-specific events when planning your trip.
Town History and the Lester Memorial
On November 9, 1889, William and Mary Thomas platted the town of Lester. The Lester Methodist Church was founded as early as 1890. The two dates mark an early period in the town’s history in close succession: first the town’s platting, then the founding of the church. The transition from laying out the town to establishing a church makes the chronology easy to follow and offers a specific historical starting point for learning about the town.
The Lester Memorial was designed to honor all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, as well as veterans who have passed away and those who are still living. It features a bronze statue with a soldier’s equipment: boots, helmet, and rifle. A gold star at the center symbolizes Gold Star Mothers. The dedication, statue, and star offer different points of focus: those being honored, military equipment, and a specific symbol of remembrance.
Days of Remembrance and Events
Remembrance is also associated with a fixed date: the Lester American Legion holds annual Memorial Day services at Hillside Cemetery. Young people help decorate the graves of U.S. Armed Forces members as part of the event. The memorial and the service have different focuses: one centers on the dedication and symbols, while the other centers on the annual day of remembrance and the participation of young people. If you’re traveling specifically to attend the service, plan your stay around Memorial Day.
The Lester Days, held August 15–17, 2025, included inflatables and fire truck rides as family activities. A rib-smoking contest was also held. These activities relate to the August 2025 event; check the dates and offerings for the year of your trip if you’d like to plan your stay around the festival.
Another seasonal community event is the Lester American Legion’s annual winter soup supper. The events described therefore differ by occasion and season: the Memorial Day service, the winter supper, and the Lester Days dated August 2025. If an event date is important to your trip, confirm the current dates before booking.
