If you’re looking for a hotel in West Liberty, you can plan your trip around a specific interest: railroad history, theater and puppetry, historic exhibition venues, or public parks. The local attractions also span different periods, including buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a specific race night in 2025.

Railroad Depots and Local History

The West Liberty Heritage Depot Museum is located at 405 N. Elm Street. It is housed in the restored 1897 Rock Island Railroad Depot. Exhibits include artifacts, displays, photographs, and memorabilia related to transportation, business, education, and agriculture. Another historic railroad landmark in West Liberty is the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Passenger Depot. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 9, 2022. In addition to a Heritage Barn, Heritage Park includes a one-room Swamp School, a 1930s tourist cabin, a 1935 switching locomotive, and an antique carousel.

Theater and Historic Exhibition Halls

The New Strand Theatre was built in 1910 as the West Liberty OperaHouse. The Muscatine County Fairgrounds in West Liberty were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. At the north end of the fairgrounds stands the Ryan Building, the main exhibition hall, built in 1915. Its exhibition topics include antiques, baked goods, fruits and vegetables, and crafts. The dates refer to different things: 1910 and 1915 are construction years, while 2015 is the year the fairgrounds were added to the register.

Puppetry for Different Audiences

Since 1974, Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre has offered artistic and educational puppetry programs. Eulenspiegel Puppets offers performances, workshops, and educational events for all audiences. For grades K–5, it offers performances connected to the Iowa Core and study guides. These events take place in West Liberty’s downtown park, the 1910 Opera House, or the Owl Glass Puppetry Center.

Public Parks and Activities

West Liberty has eight public parks. The city’s amenities include a swimming pool with a water slide, a skatepark, several baseball and softball fields, soccer fields, disc golf, tennis courts, and a walking trail. Activities range from swimming and skating to ball sports, tennis, and disc golf. If park activities matter more to your trip than historic collections and buildings, these amenities offer a distinct focus.

A Dated Travel Occasion: Racing

The West Liberty Raceway is half a mile long. During the 2025 Muscatine County Fair, it hosted a full evening of racing. If you want to plan your trip around a race, check the specific event dates for the year in question beforehand.
