El Dorado: Art, History and Parks
Accommodation in El Dorado
In El Dorado, Kansas, there’s plenty to explore during a stay, from art in the downtown area and museums to parks, trails and recreational activities.
Art and History in El Dorado
The El Dorado Main Street Sculpture Program includes sixteen sculptures in the downtown area. Mural Plaza, at 110 W. First Ave., offers three photo opportunities in one place. You can incorporate art into your travel plans in different ways: by viewing the sculptures downtown or visiting the plaza.
The Kansas Oil Museum combines an outdoor site with immersive exhibits. The grounds include a recreated oil boomtown; the exhibits present history in a different way from the walk-through setting. The World War II History Center focuses on the European, Pacific and home fronts of World War II. The Coutts Museum of Art houses more than 1,000 works and complements the historical themes with a focus on art.
The tornado monument in Graham Park also tells part of the city’s story. It commemorates the rebuilding effort after the devastating 1958 tornado. An aeolian harp sits atop a curved base, giving the monument its distinctive shape. Its connection to a specific event and its design make it an interesting stop for travelers interested in history and public art.
Parks, Trails and Activities
The parks offer different experiences. At East Park, you can walk around the pond, use the picnic tables and enjoy the play equipment. North Main Park has a spray park and tennis courts. At Forest Park, the city band performs on most Thursday evenings in summer. Since the seasonal program may change, check the current schedule before visiting.
There is an 18-hole disc golf course designed for amateur and championship play. Cyclists and walkers can follow the Bike/Pedestrian Path, a scenic four-mile route with views of the Walnut River and the surrounding natural landscape. The Golden Loop starts in downtown El Dorado. The routes offer different points of reference for planning: the Bike/Pedestrian Path has a stated length and scenery, while the Golden Loop has a stated starting point.
El Dorado State Park is three miles east of El Dorado. This distance and direction help you consider the park as a separate possible activity. Which of the activities described suits your stay depends on whether you would rather spend your time on art and history, parks and outdoor activities, or individual experiences.
Local Attractions and Hotel Search
At the Walnut River Brewing Company taproom, you can sample seasonal and select standard beers. The El Dorado Farmers & Art Market brings local vendors and resources together at a community-focused market for locally made products. Both offer something different alongside the museums, parks and trails.
Then search for hotels in El Dorado and compare the specific options to suit your travel plans.
