Elmdale is located in Kansas’s Flint Hills region, along U.S. Route 50. When choosing where to stay, you can consider nature and local history as two distinct areas of interest. Prairie trails and scenic spots are nearby; historic buildings add a perspective on architectural and usage history. This lets you focus your accommodation search on the topics that interest you most during your trip.

Prairie Trails and Landscapes

Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is located northeast of Elmdale. A trails page from the National Park Service, last updated July 30, 2024, lists 40 miles of prairie trails and describes them as open around the clock every day. The distance and opening information are specific points of reference for planning if hiking is the focus of your trip. Check the National Park Service’s current visitor information before your visit.

Chase Lake Falls is just east of the city, at Chase County Lake. Compared with the Preserve to the northeast, this landscape feature marks a different direction. This orientation can help you distinguish the nature-related sites in your plans and account for their different locations.

Agricultural and Architectural History

The McNee Barns include a horse barn built around 1920, a boxcar barn built in 1948, a dry-stone wall, and an Aermotor windmill. There are about three decades between the construction dates of the two barns. The complex is locally significant for its agricultural and architectural history.

Transportation History and Historic Construction Dates

Transportation history provides an earlier point in time: in 1871, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway built an east-west main line through Elmdale. Elmdale’s former town hall was built in 1936, with labor provided by the Works Progress Administration. Various social and community organizations once used the building for meetings and activities. The old town hall can be seen from Main Street. As of 2023, it was considered abandoned. Check its condition on site before visiting. Its former role as a gathering place adds a community perspective to its architectural history.

The Andrew Drummond House was built in 1891, and the old People’s Exchange Bank in 1898. Both dates fall in the late 19th century, before the town hall was built in 1936. In chronological terms, these buildings fall between the 1871 railroad main line and the later town hall. These dates therefore mark different periods in transportation and architectural history.
