Discover Gray County: Santa Fe Trail, heritage, and golf
Accommodation in Gray County
Gray County combines the history of the Santa Fe Trail with cultural sites and golf. The Trail passed through Gray County; near the site of what later became Cimarron, the route split into the trail via Bent’s Fort and the Cimarron Route. Prominent wagon ruts are visible in Cimarron, while Soule Canal–Gray County Segment 1 lies on the eastern edge of Ingalls. Cimarron Golf Club also offers a distinctive focus for trip planning.
Santa Fe Trail: Route and Visible Traces
The route split near the site of what later became Cimarron makes the Santa Fe Trail a tangible part of regional history: one route went via Bent’s Fort, the other via the Cimarron Route. Prominent wagon ruts from the Trail are still visible in Cimarron today. This offers a chance to explore two different aspects: the historic route and its two branches, and a trace that remains visible in the landscape. Those interested in the Trail will find both a historical connection and a tangible feature in Cimarron.
Historic Sites in Cimarron
The Cimarron Hotel was built in 1886. The old Gray County Courthouse in Cimarron was connected with the County Seat War of 1889; the Gray County Veteran’s Memorial is located at the current Gray County Courthouse. These sites represent different chapters: the hotel points to architectural history, the old courthouse to the dispute over the county seat, and the memorial to remembrance of veterans. Together, they offer several distinct points of reference for Cimarron’s local history.
Heritage Between Ingalls and Other Sites
Soule Canal–Gray County Segment 1 is located on the eastern edge of Ingalls in Gray County, Kansas. It is one of the best-preserved examples of the Soule Canal in Gray County. Unlike the buildings and wagon ruts in Cimarron, the focus here is a single canal section. Its state of preservation makes it a distinctive part of local heritage.
The Stauth Memorial Museum presents the worldwide travel experiences of Claude and Donalda Stauth, who lived in Montezuma. The Wall Western Collection includes miniature bronzes by Frederic Remington. Thus, travel experiences and a collection of miniature bronzes sit side by side. Clark Pharmacy offers another perspective, more closely tied to Cimarron: its old-fashioned soda fountain was installed in 1939. This detail, which can be dated, complements the major historical themes with a connection to local everyday life.
Golf and Activities in Cimarron
Cimarron Golf Club covers 91 acres in the historic Santa Fe Trail area. The terrain is rolling and features native plants and trees. Practice facilities include a grass driving range, covered hitting bays, and a short-game practice area. The three facilities offer different practice options; at the same time, the terrain and vegetation shape the character of the club.
Cimarron also has paths for walking and cycling. For getting around by road, its location on Highway 50 is convenient: Cimarron lies between Garden City and Dodge City. The town thus brings together local history, opportunities for walking and cycling, and a convenient location on a major highway.
