Parsons combines railway history with museums, art and nature experiences. Its attractions offer a variety of ways to explore these themes.

Railway Heritage and Local History

The Iron Horse Museum is housed in a replica of a Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad depot from around 1900. The grounds feature a locomotive, a boxcar, a flatcar, a track crane and a caboose; there are also operational MK&T signals. The historic railway depot and a range of railcars and signaling equipment are all highlights.

The Parsons Historical Museum traces the development of Parsons from its beginnings to the present day. The Carnegie Arts Center offers another perspective on local history: it is located in the former Carnegie Library and hosts a variety of community events. The building is the only one in Parsons listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can explore different aspects of the city through the broad history presented at the Historical Museum, the railway theme and the historic Arts Center building.

The annual Katy Days Festival also celebrates Parsons’ railway heritage and local history. It takes place every year over Memorial Day weekend. Unlike the museums, it is a recurring event tied to a specific weekend. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your intended travel year.

Parks, Trails and Nature

Tolen Creek Park combines natural walking trails, wildlife viewing and historic and artistic attractions. The trails cover more than 1.5 miles. The park also offers opportunities for birdwatching in a natural habitat. If you’re especially interested in nature, you’ll find a different focus here than at the railway history exhibits.

Notable features of Tolen Creek Park also include the Stone House, dating to around 1895, and the 13-foot-tall limestone sculpture “Ancient Man.” A walk through the park can take in two specific sites: a historic building and a work of art. The sculpture’s height and material give you an idea of its design, without requiring a longer museum visit.

Forest Park offers a network of decorative trails and is also the setting for seasonal events. The summer concert series “Music in the Park” takes place there. On summer evenings, the Kiwanis Pancake Special Train offers rides through the park in a scale model of a Katy Railroad locomotive. The concert series and train rides offer different experiences in the same park. If one of these events is important to your trip, plan around the relevant dates.

Lake Parsons and Other Recreational Activities

At the north end of Lake Parsons is an extensive tract of native pine forest that provides habitat for deer and other wildlife. The lake also has a swimming area and improved campsites for RVs and tents; stays are permitted for up to 12 days. This sets Lake Parsons apart from the trails at Tolen Creek Park: camping, swimming and wildlife habitat are the main features here, while Tolen Creek Park focuses on trails and birdwatching.

Another option is the public Katy Golf Course, a 9-hole course. If you’re interested in a compact golf option, the number of holes is a useful detail for planning your trip.

Other Interests

The Curious Minds Discovery Zone offers hands-on learning and activities. The Parsons Farmers Market sells locally grown fruits, vegetables, nuts and honey; it is aimed primarily at residents of southeast Kansas.
