Wyandotte County: History, Nature and Motorsport
Accommodation in Wyandotte County
Wyandotte County brings together a range of travel interests: cultural history and agriculture, trails through parkland, golf and motorsport. If you’re looking for a hotel, your planned itinerary can be a helpful starting point. The destinations vary considerably: Alongside historic collections and buildings are trails with specific stated lengths and activities that are offered only on race days. This can help you decide before your trip which themes you want to shape your time in the county.
History and Agriculture
The Wyandotte County Museum is located in Wyandotte County Park in Bonner Springs; you can get there via I-70, Highway 7 or State Avenue. Road conditions may change. Its archaeological collections include Native American artifacts; the museum also tells the stories of the Shawnee, Delaware and Wyandot.
Grinter Place is a two-story brick house, completed in 1857. Today, it is the oldest surviving house in Wyandotte County. Another historical connection is Moses Grinter, who operated a successful ferry service and trading post.
Farm Town USA gives children the chance to experience a lesson in a historic one-room schoolhouse. The Museum of Farming has a different focus: It displays historic artifacts related to the development of farming techniques and machinery. This offers two distinct ways to explore the subject: an experience in a schoolhouse and the history of agricultural practices and equipment.
Trails, Parkland and Rivers
Wyandotte County Lake Park is a 1,500-acre natural oasis. Its scenic trails cover more than eight miles, including White Tail Loop and Vulture Ridge, and are suitable for hiking and biking. Boating is permitted on Wyandotte County Lake. Check the current rules before setting out.
The Nature Trail at the National Agricultural Center has a different profile: A 0.75-mile section winds through the trees, with an additional 0.5-mile loop around the pond. The trail lengths offer different points of comparison: Lake Park has a trail network of more than eight miles, while the Nature Trail consists of two sections, each with its own length.
Kaw Point Park is located at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers and offers a starting point for hiking and biking trails. The Lewis and Clark Expedition’s camp at Kaw Point provides a historical time marker: The expedition camped there from June 26 to 28, 1804. Here, a notable geographical feature meets a precisely dated event in the history of the expedition.
Golf, Motorsport and Festivals
For golf, there’s Sunflower Hills, an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Roger Packard. Motorsport has a different seasonal focus: Kansas Speedway features a 1.5-mile tri-oval track and hosts two NASCAR Cup Series weekends each year.
On race days, the Display Midway offers activities including driver appearances, race scanner rentals, games and interactive experiences. Arriving early is recommended for these offerings. This is especially relevant if you’re planning your visit around a race day; the Midway activities described are only available on those days.
The Kansas City Renaissance Festival also offers specific food examples: Festival fare includes turkey legs, fried pickles and apple dumplings. The seasonal selection may vary. Together, these different highlights can help you decide whether you’d like to focus on history, outdoor trails, golf, motorsport or a festival during your trip.
