If you choose Breckinridge as a destination, you can plan your trip around its landscape, regional history, art or motorsports history. The county offers a variety of places to explore these themes: an environmental education area, historic sites, a gallery and a long-running festival. Deciding which of these themes you want to shape your stay is a useful starting point for planning your trip. These places differ primarily in their focus; it is important to check seasonal opening hours and event dates before your visit.

Landscape and orientation

Breckinridge County Wildlife Education Park is a demonstration area for environmental education, focused on restoring native warm-season grasses. It is open for passive recreation only, from sunrise to sunset; there are no public hiking trails. You should avoid the park during active shooting events at the adjacent Sportsman Club. If you plan to visit, both the time of day and activity at the neighboring club are important considerations.

The Cloverport Historic District is bounded by the Ohio River to the north and Clover Creek to the south. Happy Jack's Winery is located in Breckinridge County on the shore of Rough River Lake. Waterways therefore serve as landmarks in two different ways: as boundaries of a historic district and as a landscape feature associated with a named place.

The three towns in Breckinridge County lie along US Highway 60; their shared location on this road can help you find your way around the county. Breckinridge County Airport has a new terminal building and a 4,000-foot concrete runway. Confirm the airport's facilities and operating status before your trip.

Cloverport and regional history

Cloverport's historic resources are significant to the cultural development of Breckinridge County. The town was also an important commercial and cultural center, as well as a river port for the county. This places Cloverport's significance in both a local context and the broader history of the county's development.

Joseph Holt's biography offers another way to explore the area's history. From 1862 to 1875, he served as Judge Advocate General of the United States Army; after the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, he led the trial of the conspirators. Holt is buried alongside his parents and other relatives in the family cemetery at the Joseph Holt Home site.

The Irvington Depot and Museum houses historical artifacts from the local community. It is located in a former Louisville & Nashville Railroad station, built in the 1920s.

Art, festivals and motorsports history

River's Edge Art Gallery offers exhibition spaces and a classroom for displaying and creating visual art. Both exhibiting and creating visual art are central to the gallery.

Cloverport hosts the long-running annual Cloverport Sacajawea Festival. If the festival is a key part of your trip, check the dates and program for your chosen travel year.

US 60 Dragway opened on July 31, 1964. Vehicles from 37 states competed in the first 1/8-mile Nationals. The number of states represented gives the early race a specific historical context.
