Elizabethtown brings together several themes that give a stay different dimensions: regional history, downtown memorial sites, and trails, a lake, and sports. The Hardin County History Museum spans the 18th century to the present day; Freeman Lake Park combines recreational opportunities with historic sites. If you’re looking for hotels in Elizabethtown, you can first consider whether museums and city history or outdoor activities should play a bigger role in your stay.

Museums and Historic Sites

The Hardin County History Museum presents regional history from the 18th century to the present day through artifacts, exhibits, and events. It features changing and permanent exhibits and is part of the official Lincoln Trail through Kentucky. This broad time span sets it apart from individual historic memorial sites: the museum focuses on regional development over several centuries.

The Swope’s Cars of Yesteryear Museum grew out of Bill Swope’s collection of classic and historic vehicles in Elizabethtown. Its origins as a vehicle collection give it a narrower focus than the broad regional history covered by the Hardin County History Museum.

Several historic sites are located in Freeman Lake Park. The Lincoln Heritage House was built by Abraham Lincoln’s father. The Summit One-Room Schoolhouse served students from the surrounding area from 1892 to 1953. The Sarah Bush Johnston Log Cabin is a replica commemorating the home of Abraham Lincoln’s stepmother. The three sites offer different historical points of reference: a house that was built, a schoolhouse with a defined period of use, and a commemorative replica.

Downtown, Trails, and Activities

The Historic Downtown District covers more than 20 city blocks. In downtown Elizabethtown, the town’s historic cannonball has been embedded in the wall of a building for more than 150 years. A historic costumed walking tour of downtown lasted about an hour and covered an area of four city blocks. These details convey the city’s history both through a larger district and through a tour with a defined duration and route.

Freeman Lake Park is located on a 170-acre lake. It has a free 18-hole disc golf course. Two paved trails, Lakeside Loop and Freeman Lake Trail, are used for hiking and biking; a network of hiking trails is also connected to the Freeman Lake trail system. The activities differ in format: the disc golf course has a set 18-hole layout, while the named trails are for hiking and biking.

Elizabethtown is Kentucky’s first Urban Trail Town. The Buffalo Lake Trail is 8.5 miles long. Along the trail, the landscape varies, with cliffs, rock formations, gorges, and springs. Thus, alongside the named trails at Freeman Lake, there is also a single route with a specific length and diverse landscapes to explore.

For baseball and softball, Elizabethtown Sports Park has three artificial turf playing surfaces. Alongside city history, park trails, and landscapes, these dedicated sports facilities offer another distinct focus for trip planning.
