Jenkins: History, Geology, and Nature
Accommodation in Jenkins
Jenkins, Kentucky, offers a variety of points of interest for a trip: the history of Pound Gap, a geological feature along U.S. Route 23, a museum in a 1911 railroad depot, and nature and recreation around Fishpond Lake. When planning, you can treat historical sites, geology, and outdoor activities as separate areas of focus.
Pound Gap: History and Geology
Kentucky Historical Marker No. 510 for Pound Gap is located on U.S. 23/119 in Jenkins. Before heading there, check how access from the roadside is possible. U.S. Route 23 also runs through Pound Gap. Here, an important road connection meets a landscape whose history is shaped by several historic dates.
The historical marker records that Christopher Gist discovered the route through the passage on April 1, 1751. It also notes two events from the Civil War: on March 16, 1862, Brigadier General Garfield and 700 Union troops drove 500 Confederate soldiers from the passage. On June 1, 1864, Morgan’s Raiders drove the Union troops from the passage. Pound Gap is considered the site of the first Battle of Whitesburg. These dates can be understood as milestones in regional history without confusing them with the road’s later development.
Geology is also connected to U.S. Route 23. The Pine Mountain Pound Gap Thrust Fault was exposed during construction of a new section of the road in 1998. On September 26 of that same year, Pound Gap was named Kentucky’s first Distinguished Geologic Site. The construction context and the geological designation are both part of the area’s history, but describe different aspects: the exposure of the formation and its recognition as a geological site.
Museum and Cultural Connections
The David A. Zegeer Coal-Railroad Museum is housed in an authentically restored 1911 railroad depot. Its address is 102 Main Street in Jenkins, Kentucky. If you’re planning a visit, check current visiting options in advance. The depot itself gives the museum a clear connection to the town’s construction history; its precise address is also a practical point of reference when planning.
Theater productions are also among Jenkins’ cultural connections. The town was involved in the production of The Little Shepherd of Kingdom Come. The Little Shepherd Drama received an award for membership in the Institute of Outdoor Dramas.
Fishpond Lake and Outdoor Recreation
Fishpond Lake is a man-made lake in Jenkins. Its facilities include RV sites, primitive camping, and shelters. The lake is also a habitat for freshwater jellyfish, a resident trout population, bass, catfish, and other Kentucky species. These aspects are presented side by side: the listed facilities for spending time outdoors and the lake’s wildlife and fish.
There are nearly 20 miles of ATV trails at Fishpond Lake, managed and maintained by First Frontier Appalachian Trails. To distinguish the different offerings, you can consider the trail information separately from the camping and nature topics: it describes a network of trails for ATV riding, while the other information concerns the lake and its facilities or biodiversity.
Jenkins Pool is a municipal recreation complex at 229 Lakeside Drive. The complex includes a water park and a softball field. The Pine Mountain and Jenkins overlooks offer 60-mile views. Combs Overlook is located in Jenkins near the state line. These location and offering details give you different topics to consider when planning, without implying that every overlook offers the same view distance.
