If you’re looking for a hotel in Taylor County, it’s worth first considering the focus of your trip: activities at Green River Lake, outdoor trails and historic sites offer different starting points. Events in Campbellsville and Taylor County may also be important when planning. This lets you consider nature experiences, culture and festival dates as separate parts of your itinerary.

Green River Lake: Lake, Shoreline and Facilities

Green River Lake is located in Adair and Taylor counties, amid rolling terrain, steep cliffs and flowing waters. Green River Lake State Park stretches along the shoreline over 1,331 acres; the lake covers 8,210 acres. These figures describe different areas: the state park and the lake itself. Green River Lake is managed to protect wildlife and fish stocks and to provide recreational opportunities.

The area includes campgrounds, boat ramps, picnic shelters, beaches and a visitor center. The swimming beach at the campground may be available seasonally; facility availability may also change due to seasonal conditions or renovations. The Green River Lake Visitor Center, a free visitor attraction, is near the dam. Check current access information for the individual facilities before your visit.

Trails and Their Different Profiles

Campbellsville and Taylor County have more than 50 miles of trails for mountain biking, hiking and horseback riding. The Tebbs Bend Green River Nature Trails offer more than 7 miles of hiking trails; conditions may change seasonally. The Trace-Pitman Greenway has a different profile: it is a paved, 2.2-mile trail with a 0.4-mile loop and follows Little Pitman Creek and Trace Creek.

The two trails therefore differ in length and surface. You may also spot deer or great blue herons on the Trace-Pitman Greenway; sightings are not guaranteed. When planning specific hikes, it’s a good idea to take seasonal trail conditions into account.

Paddling on the Green River

The Green River Paddle Trail offers kayak and canoe rentals for self-guided trips on the Green River, including life jackets and paddles. Trips are available by appointment. The Paddle Trail starts at the tailwater below the dam. Check water levels and conditions at the launch point before setting out.

History and Architecture

The Battle of Tebbs Bend took place at the Tebbs Bend-Green River Bridge Battlefield on July 4, 1863. Built in 1840, the Atkinson-Griffin House later served as a Confederate hospital.
