If you’re planning a trip to Marrero, park trails, a bike ride, Carnival, or a guided visit focused on a particular theme may influence when you travel. The offerings vary depending on whether you want to be active outdoors, experience a recurring cultural tradition, or learn about hydroponics, aquaponics, and recirculating aquaculture. Two distinctions matter for practical planning: the Spray Park is seasonal, and the 2026 Tour de Jefferson has a specific date.

Trails and activities at Parc des Familles

At Parc des Familles, a 5.5-mile mountain biking trail runs through the entire park. A walking path connects its northern and southern ends. This lets you choose between riding a mountain bike and walking through the park. Grand Cypress Bayou Disc Golf Course offers another activity: it has 18 holes and is free and open to the public. The trail length, walking path, and number of holes give you different points of reference when deciding what kind of exercise or recreation you prefer.

Parc des Familles is open daily from 7 a.m. until dusk; check current hours before your visit. The park also includes a Spray Park with 20 water features. It is open seasonally for children age ten and under, so check in advance whether it will be operating during your stay. There is also a kayak rental kiosk near the fishing pier, provided by Bayou Adventure. If you plan to rent a kayak, confirm availability before your visit.

Bike Ride and Carnival in Marrero

The Tour de Jefferson has been held annually since 2006. The 2026 event is scheduled for Sunday, November 22, starting and finishing at Estelle Playground in Marrero. The date and route apply to this edition; future events may differ. If you’re planning your trip around a specific date, this distinction helps you separate the 2026 event from future rides.

Carnival also adds its own cultural touch. The mixed Mystic Krewe of Music parades through Marrero on the West Bank with more than 250 participants and 20 music-themed floats. The krewe was founded in 2023 and is a recurring cultural tradition. Its musical floats and the size of the parade offer a different experience from the trails and recreational activities in the park.

Tours and Visitor Conditions

The Urban Aquafarm & Training Center in Marrero offers tours for school classes, gardening clubs, conference groups, and families. They provide a firsthand look at hydroponics, aquaponics, and recirculating aquaculture. This makes a visit an opportunity to explore these topics in more depth. If you want to make a tour a firm part of your plans, confirm your booking and availability with the operator.

Barataria Preserve explores the culture of the people who have inhabited the Delta, both in the past and today, as well as the unique ecosystem that sustained them. An important restriction applies when planning your day: the visitor center and trails are temporarily closed. The exceptions are Twin Canals Trail and the parking lot; both are open for day use from sunrise to sunset. Check conditions before you travel so you can account for this exception in your plans.
