Rayville brings together several cultural and historical topics that can be considered separately when planning a stay. These include the range of architectural styles, specific building histories, churches, and a mural associated with the post office. There are also recreational programs for children and adults. Depending on whether your main interest is buildings, church history, or recreation, you can focus on a different aspect when choosing a hotel.

Architecture and Building History

The Rayville Historic District is notable for its range of American architectural styles; many incorporate Louisiana's traditional regional building methods and materials. The District's significance therefore lies in its diversity of styles and their connection to regional building traditions. St. David's Episcopal Church in Rayville has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places since 2007.

The Nonnie Roark Rhymes Memorial Library is a small, rectangular, single-story brick building, constructed in 1928 on the edge of downtown Rayville. Rayville High School was built in 1930 on the edge of the old business district as a three-story brick building in the Neoclassical style. It is still considered eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places and is a significant architectural landmark in Rayville. Both are brick buildings, but they differ considerably in height and form: the library is single-story and rectangular, while the school is three-story and Neoclassical. Their location descriptions also differ: the library is on the edge of downtown, while the school is on the edge of the old business district.

It is also important to distinguish between the Register statuses: St. David's Episcopal Church is listed, while Rayville High School is still considered eligible for listing. These are different status descriptions and should not be conflated.

Churches, Worship, and Art

The new Rayville Methodist Church building was constructed in 1952 under the direction of Rev. Burton Emmerich and paid off by 1954. A formal service, led by hymns sung by the choir, is held in the main church; an informal service takes place in the Fellowship Hall. Service times may change, so check the published schedule before your visit. If you plan to visit Rayville Methodist Church, you can contact the office by phone.

Elsie Driggs's 1939 mural “LaSalle's Quest for the Mississippi” is associated with the Rayville post office. Check locally in advance to find out whether it is open to public viewing.

Recreation and Planning

The Rayville Recreation Department offers a range of recreational activities and programs for children and adults. Specific programs may change. If recreational activities are important for your travel dates, check in advance what's currently on offer. This lets you tailor this part of your plans to the activities that matter to you, without conflating it with the city's cultural and historical attractions.
