Mandeville brings together jazz history, historic architecture, and the shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain. You can explore culture, the waterfront, and outdoor activities as different sides of your destination.

Jazz and Historic Architecture

Built in 1895, the Dew Drop Jazz & Social Hall is considered the world’s oldest rural jazz dance hall that remains nearly unchanged. Its history extends beyond its year of construction: in the 1920s and 1930s, the Dew Drop was an important gathering place for jazz musicians and many loyal visitors. Today, it hosts concert series in spring and fall. The building’s history, its historic significance, and its seasonal cultural program each offer a distinct connection to Mandeville’s jazz tradition.

The city’s development can also be traced through its historic sites. The Old Mandeville Historic District encompasses the core of the 1834 plan designed by Louis Bringier, reflecting Marigny de Mandeville’s original vision. Those interested in more historic sites can take the Historic Mandeville QR Tour, which covers more than 41 different historic places.

The Jean Baptiste Lang House Museum combines a museum, gift shop, and multifunctional community space in a Creole cottage built between 1850 and 1852. Original architectural features have been preserved. The building offers its own perspective on architectural history, while the Historic District and QR Tour turn the focus to broader connections and additional historic sites.

Lakefront, Waterways, and Nature

Mandeville has 1.5 miles of shoreline along Lake Pontchartrain. The Mandeville Lakefront is a passive park about one mile long. These two figures describe different scales: the city’s shoreline and the approximate length of the park. The lakefront is also home to a fountain that was once fed by a natural spring.

The waterways Bayou Chinchuba, Bayou Castine, and Ravine aux Coquilles flow through Mandeville. They are home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, fish, birds, and waterfowl. More than 400 different species live in Fontainebleau State Park and its surroundings. The park’s nature trail has interpretive signs about common trees and shrubs, so visitors can also explore the landscape with a focus on native plants.

The 31-mile Tammany Trace is a bike path through Saint Tammany Parish that runs through Fontainebleau State Park. It is suitable for biking, walking, and inline skating. The Mandeville Trailhead is directly beside the Trace. The two offer different aspects of outdoor recreation: a regional trail that passes through several areas and a trailhead located right along the route.

Fontainebleau State Park is also home to the crumbling brick ruins of a sugar mill built by Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville in 1829. This historic site is part of the park and adds another layer of regional history to the natural setting.

Cultural Offerings at the Mandeville Trailhead

The Mandeville Trailhead includes a cultural interpretation museum with an interactive exhibit about Mandeville’s history. An observation tower offers views of historic Old Mandeville. The amphitheater is a hub for annual concerts, cultural events, and community gatherings. From March through October, local children also use a splash pad there. The museum, views, events, and seasonal use show different sides of this place, each with its own focus.

Chafunkta Brewing Company in Mandeville offers brewery tours; check the visit details before your trip. If a concert is important to your travel dates, note the different schedules: the series at the Dew Drop take place in spring and fall, while events at the Trailhead are held annually. It’s a good idea to check specific dates before your trip.
