Webster: Cultural History, Markets and Trails
Accommodation in Webster
Webster brings together historic sites, local events, and trails to explore on foot, by bike, or on the water. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering which themes and dates are most important: in Minden, settlement and architectural history shape the cultural focus; markets, festivals, and trails at Caney Lakes offer further options. Depending on when you travel, you can focus your stay more on historic sites, a market or festival date, or outdoor activities.
History and Culture
The Germantown Colony Museum tells the story of a group of settlers led by Count and Countess von Leon. The Minden Historic District includes 71 buildings; all but two are homes dating from about 1850 to 1942. Settlement history and historic residential architecture thus offer distinct ways to explore the past.
The Minden Presbyterian Church is the oldest church building in Minden and is located in the Historic Residential District. Film history is also part of the Northwest Louisiana Film Trail, which includes filming locations in Minden and other places between Shreveport-Bossier and Minden. In Minden, visitors can follow the map and scan QR codes on the signs at each location to watch scenes filmed there.
The Farm of Cultural Crossroads offers tours of Zenobe West’s historic home, as well as art classes and demonstrations. Summer programs also include a farmers market. The offerings there range from learning about a historic home to exploring art and visiting a seasonal market.
Markets and Events
The Springhill Farmers Market brings together farmers, artisans, and small businesses. It offers fresh, locally grown produce and handmade goods. Check the market’s current schedule when planning your trip.
The Webster Parish Fair takes place every fall and features rides, games, food, and entertainment. Livestock exhibits include cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and rabbits, cared for by local 4-H and FFA students. The specific selection of animals may vary.
The Springhill Lumberjack Festival takes place every year and showcases North Louisiana’s lumberjack traditions through demonstrations by lumberjacks and displays of lumberjack culture. Muddy Bottoms also hosts Cajun Muddy Gras every year. Main to Main Trade Days is a recurring, nearly 50-mile-long outdoor market connecting communities across Webster Parish on the first full weekend in November. Before your trip, check upcoming festival dates and the times for The Farm’s summer program.
Trails and Outdoor Activities
The marked Bayou Dorcheat Paddling Trail runs 6 miles between Dixie Inn and Doyline. Depending on your pace and the current, the trip usually takes two to three hours. There are six boat ramps in Webster Parish providing access to Bayou Dorcheat.
On the north side of Caney Lakes, Lost Man’s Trail is an approximately 3-mile loop with moderately challenging terrain and views of the water. The Sugar Cane National Recreation Trail forms an approximately 6-mile loop around Caney Lakes and is suitable for walking, running, and biking. The longer Sugar Cane Trail thus offers a different distance and range of activities from the shorter Lost Man’s Trail loop.
For a break, Miller Quarters Park offers picnic tables, swings, and an area for food trucks. Since park amenities may change, check their current status before your visit.
