Discover Gorham
Accommodation in Gorham
Gorham combines an extensive trail network with natural areas and historic destinations. Year-round activities sit alongside museums, a historic town center, and a former mill site.
Trail Network and Year-Round Activities
Gorham’s trail network covers more than 50 miles of varied terrain. It includes paved and gravel paths as well as narrow hiking and biking trails. The network crosses public, publicly accessible private, and quasi-public lands. Throughout the year, it supports activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, fat biking, and snowmobiling. Gorham is also home to one of southern Maine’s first pump tracks, adding a different type of facility to the biking scene.
Natural Areas in the North and Town Center
In northern Gorham, the trails of Cummings Preserve run along the Presumpscot River, just south of Dundee Dam. The preserve offers hiking, running, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. Its riverside setting thus goes hand in hand with several activities mentioned for both summer and winter.
Frazier Preserve offers a different landscape: it includes wetlands and woodland in the center of Gorham. The two places therefore differ in the features described. Cummings Preserve is defined by its riverside location and activities, while Frazier Preserve is notable for its landscape in the town center.
Historic Sites and Buildings
The Gorham Historic District includes 42 buildings in the town center. The ruins of a former gunpowder mill are located in Gambo Preserve. The site was once home to the Oriental Powder Mill, Maine’s first gunpowder mill (1824) and also the largest in the state. These places offer different perspectives on Gorham’s history: a cohesive district in the town center and the ruins of a former mill site.
The Art Gallery at USM is also among Gorham’s historic destinations. It is located on the Gorham campus in a building constructed in 1821 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Here, a single historic building can be contrasted with a district of 42 buildings.
The Baxter House Museum
The Baxter House Museum continues to acquire and exhibit artifacts related to Gorham’s history. From June through August, it is open Tuesdays and Thursdays, as well as the first Saturday of the month, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Visits are also possible by special arrangement. Check seasonal opening hours before your visit.
Choosing a Focus for Your Gorham Trip
If you’re looking for a hotel in Gorham, you can start by considering which theme you want your trip to focus on: the trail network and year-round activities, or the town’s history, with its museum, buildings, and mill ruins. This distinction can help you plan your trip around your interests.
