When you choose Gouldsboro as your destination, different travel interests come together in specific places: wetlands rich in wildlife, loop and hiking trails, paddling and fishing opportunities, coastal views, and historic buildings. The protected areas differ in their landscapes, trail types, and activities.

Nature Areas and Coastal Views

Forbes Pond Preserve is located in Gouldsboro and covers 980 acres; the wetlands rich in wildlife at Forbes Pond are its focal point. The acreage refers to the entire preserve, not just the wetlands. Frances B. Wood Preserve protects the higher-elevation portion of a watershed with significant tidal estuaries and mudflats. On the south coast of Stave Island Preserve, there are views of Frenchman Bay, Mount Desert Island, and the peaks of Acadia National Park. This offers a choice of different nature experiences: wetlands, a tidal landscape, and a coastal panorama.

Loop Trails, Hiking Trails, and Paddling

Forbes Pond Preserve has a two-mile network of three interconnected loop trails. Paddling and fishing are also possible at Forbes Pond. Day Ridges Preserve also offers two miles of hiking trails. Its nature trails pass through a cedar swamp and by impressive glacial erratics. There is also access to a paddling route that begins at Lower West Bay Pond. Although both preserves list two miles of trails, their offerings differ: at Forbes Pond, the focus is on the layout of three interconnected loops; at Day Ridges, it is on the nature trails and access to a paddling route. This lets you weigh trail types and additional water activities together.

Stave Island: Trails and Camping

Stave Island has informal footpaths and a short coastal trail leading to a viewpoint. In addition to the informal paths, the coastal trail has a specific destination. Camping is permitted there only at the designated campground. If camping is part of your travel plans, take this restriction into account.

Getting Your Bearings

At Taft Point Preserve, the access road and parking area with six spaces are on Taft Point Road in Gouldsboro. Near West Gouldsboro, ME-186, part of the Schoodic Scenic Byway, heads south toward Acadia National Park. These two details help with different orientation questions: Taft Point Road describes access to the preserve, while ME-186 indicates the route south toward Acadia.

Architecture and Museum Visits

The West Gouldsboro Village Library is a building constructed in 1907 in the Tudor Revival style. Its construction year and style provide a specific point of reference for the town’s architectural history. The Old Town House Museum is located in the Old Town House in Gouldsboro. Visits are currently possible by appointment only. If you plan to visit the museum, arrange your appointment in advance.
