Fryeburg can be explored through several different highlights: the Saco River, forest trails and local history. When planning your trip, you can choose between activities on the water, walking and cycling trails, and cultural topics. Some offerings are clearly seasonal; others invite you to discover the region’s landscape and history in greater depth.

River Landscape and Fryeburg Town Forest

The Saco River winds through Fryeburg. In summer, you can rent canoes, kayaks or inner tubes on the river and travel downstream to nearby places. This makes rentals an explicitly summertime highlight, while the river is also a defining feature of the town’s landscape.

The Fryeburg Town Forest covers 74 acres, is owned by the Town of Fryeburg and is managed by the town. The forest area includes 900 feet of shoreline along the Saco River, several small streams and historic stone walls. The Silver Maple Floodplain Forest, a unique and endangered habitat, is also located in the forest. The area therefore encompasses riverbanks and streams as well as woodland and a specially designated habitat.

Walking and Cycling Trails

The trail in Fryeburg Town Forest is one mile long and passes through many different types of forest. A longer option is the Mountain Division Trail (Fryeburg Segment): the paved route is four miles long and intended for family-friendly cycling or walking.

The Mountain Division Trail is ten feet wide and suitable for people of all ages and abilities, including those with strollers or wheelchairs. There are several access points along the route, parking areas, some mountain views and rest areas. You can park at both trailheads and roughly halfway along the route at Porter Road. Its width and paved surface distinguish this route from the description of the forest trail; each has its own stated length and passes through a different landscape.

Near Fryeburg, a short trail leads up to Jockey Cap Rock. This distinctive granite outcrop in the Saco River Valley was shaped by glaciers long ago. The trail offers wide-ranging views of the river valley, the surrounding peaks and Fryeburg. In this way, a short trail combines a geological feature with views of several landscape elements.

Local History and Fryeburg Fair

The Fryeburg Historical Society collects and preserves information about the history of Fryeburg, the Fryeburg region, Oxford County and Maine. Its collection also includes articles, specimens and material objects that illustrate the customs and ways of life of earlier times. The society’s museum and library are located at 83 Portland Street, Fryeburg, Maine 04037. For those interested in local history, both the society’s collection and the historic stone walls preserved in the Town Forest offer distinct points of interest.

Fryeburg has hosted the Fryeburg Fair, an agricultural fall fair, since 1851. Its program includes tractor competitions, evening concerts and sheepdog demonstrations, among other events. Unusual competition events include distance throwing of frying pans and anvils. As a fall fair, the Fryeburg Fair offers a different seasonal experience from the summer rentals of canoes, kayaks and inner tubes on the Saco River.

When planning, you can therefore weigh different interests: river activities are explicitly associated with summer, while the Fryeburg Fair is associated with fall. The trails in the Town Forest, the paved Mountain Division Trail and the nearby viewpoint at Jockey Cap Rock each offer a different focus for outdoor activity and scenery. The Fryeburg Historical Society adds topics related to local and regional history to these options.
