Caratunk: Water, Geology, and Winter
Accommodation in Caratunk
Caratunk is located on Route 201 along the Kennebec River south of The Forks. Several clearly distinct themes come into play when choosing a destination here: waterscapes along Pleasant Pond and the Kennebec River, geological formations such as Baker Pond Falls and the Caratunk Esker, and routes associated with different activities.
Landscape: Waterfalls and Geological Formations
Baker Pond Falls are notable for their unique geology and scenic beauty. They begin in a 13-foot-deep gorge and plunge 16 feet over a distance of about 50 feet. These measurements describe different dimensions: the depth of the gorge, the length of the waterfall, and the drop in elevation. Baker Pond Falls are also among the 50 notable waterfalls in Maine.
The Caratunk Esker offers a different landscape feature. It covers about 37 acres along Wyman Lake south of the village and is among the largest and best-developed eskers in Maine. Its two ridges, each more than 100 feet high, are unusual. At Baker Pond Falls, the gorge and waterfall are the focus, while the esker stands out for its extent and double-ridge shape. These are two very different scales to consider when comparing the area’s landscape features.
Pleasant Pond: Boating, Fishing, and Winter
Pleasant Pond is a Great Pond covering more than 10 acres. Boating and fishing are available there, and ice fishing is a popular winter activity. There is also a paved boat launch for freshwater boats at Pleasant Pond in Caratunk. The activities on the water vary by season: boating and fishing are joined by ice fishing, which is specifically a winter activity.
Routes Through Caratunk
The Pleasant Pond Trail is a snowmobile trail in Caratunk. It goes around Pleasant Pond toward South Beach and through the Dimmicks to Baker and Moxie Ponds. ITS 87 also runs through Caratunk, but it loops around Moxie Mountain, Black Nubble, and Cow Mountain; the route offers impressive views. Trail conditions can change. Check current conditions if you plan to take one of these routes.
The Appalachian Trail runs through Caratunk. It follows Pleasant Pond Stream and the northwestern shore of Pleasant Pond before climbing Pleasant Pond Mountain. The Kennebec River Crossing is the only staffed crossing along the Appalachian Trail. On the way to Pleasant Pond Mountain, the route passes through Caratunk Village and then climbs via Pleasant Pond Road.
Winter and Historical Connections
Several different activities are described for winter in Caratunk. Cross-country skiing is a popular winter sport; nearby trails and old logging roads through the forest are suitable for it. Ice fishing on Pleasant Pond offers a clear contrast: the water is the focus here, while the trails and logging roads are the routes mentioned for cross-country skiing. The Pleasant Pond Trail, in turn, is designated as a snowmobile trail, another distinct type of route.
Caratunk also has a historical connection: the Arnold Trail to Quebec Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in October 2019. This adds a historically dated point of reference to the routes and landscape features described, for visitors who want to consider the area’s history as well as its nature and activities.
