Sanford offers different ways to explore nature trails and local history: a network of trails, individually named routes, and historic sites with specific ties to the city. When planning, it makes a difference whether you have a downtown route, a forest loop, or a seasonal guided tour in mind.

Trails Through Town and Nature

The Sanford Trails are free for the public to use. They connect residential neighborhoods, natural areas, the Mousam River, and the downtown areas of Sanford and Springvale. The trail network includes challenging footpaths, paved bike paths, historic trails, multi-use paths, and a boardwalk.

These categories offer specific guidance when choosing a type of trail: paved bike paths have a different focus than challenging footpaths, while multi-use paths are a category of their own. The Sanford Trails are therefore a network with different types of trails and connections, not a single route with a uniform profile.

Comparing two named routes makes the differences in setting and form clear: Virginia Hurd Morin Preserve is a 95-acre, unspoiled woodland with a well-marked loop trail for visitors. The Sanford Historic Walk is a signed historic trail through downtown areas. So visitors can choose between a loop through the woods and a historic downtown route.

Historic Sites and Their Stories

The Sweat-Morin Homestead includes the house built in 1786 for Reverend Moses Sweat, Sanford’s first Congregational minister. This dated building is connected to Sanford’s religious history. The Homestead is open for tours on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from April through October. Check for holiday exceptions and current seasonal dates before visiting.

The Sanford Mills Historic District was listed in the National Register of Historic Places at the local level for its industrial and architectural significance. Both aspects are part of the reason for its listing and connect the District to both industrial and architectural history.

The former Sanford Town Hall is located in Springvale, a village within the Town of Sanford. It was listed in the National Register of Historic Places because of its connection to Sanford’s municipal government from 1873 to 1908 and its use as a public hall from 1873 to 1960. The two time periods therefore refer to different functions of the building.

In York County, the Sanford-Springvale Historical Society collects, preserves, and displays artifacts, documents, records, photographs, and other historically significant materials and objects from Sanford and Springvale. This historical perspective also includes written and visual records, as well as collection items from both communities.

Summer Baseball

Every summer, the local Sanford Mainers play baseball games at historic Goodall Park. The team is part of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Check the current schedule for specific game dates. While tours at the Homestead are tied to a particular day of the week, time, and season, a visit to a game depends on the current schedule.
