Massey: Aviation History and Fly-Ins
Accommodation in Massey
Visitors drawn to Massey by its aviation history will find a special point of interest at the Massey Air Museum. It is a living airport museum that recalls rural airports of a bygone era. Its offerings include aircraft, insights into restoration work, and public events. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between a museum visit, a specific fly-in, and a seasonal sightseeing flight: each has a different focus, and they are not the same experience.
The Massey Air Museum and Airfield
Massey Aerodrome has a 3,000-foot grass runway that opened in 2001. Two hangars house 11 airworthy aircraft. Visitors can go inside the DC-3 at the Massey Air Museum and observe ongoing aircraft restoration work. The museum therefore offers both a close-up look at aircraft and insights into their restoration.
Outdoor exhibits include a full-scale model of an F4U Corsair. A rotating lighthouse and a 1920s agricultural windmill are also on display outdoors. Inside is a full-scale replica of a 1911 Wright glider. There is also a cockpit exhibit that children can enter. The exhibits thus include aircraft models and replicas, as well as other outdoor objects.
Fly-Ins with Different Focuses
The Antique Airplane Fly-In is an event rated by the Antique Airplane Association (AAA) and is open to the public. A viewing area overlooking the runway lets visitors watch aircraft take off and land. Those interested in airfield operations will find a different focus here than at a visit centered mainly on the museum exhibits.
The annual Massey Open Hangar Party & Fly-In is also open to the public. The event offers tours of the aviation museum and hangars. The annual Chili Fiesta Fly-In has a different focus: participants can optionally contribute their own chili recipe or bring a dish for a communal buffet. If a particular fly-in is the reason for your trip, check the event date in advance.
Seasonal Open-Cockpit Sightseeing Flights
Seasonal open-cockpit sightseeing flights in a historic 1944 Stearman are offered from Massey Aerodrome. The aircraft served as a trainer during World War II. Its seasonal availability is important for planning: confirm that flights are being offered before booking. This lets you consider a sightseeing flight as a separate activity and distinguish it from museum visits and fly-ins.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Visit
When looking for a hotel in Massey, your reason for traveling is a useful starting point: a museum visit, a fly-in, and a sightseeing flight each have a different focus. If an event date determines your travel period, match it with your preferred stay dates. This will help you plan your hotel stay around the activities you want to experience in Massey.
