New Bedford brings its history to life through museums, historic sites, and waterfront paths. Whaling and fishing shape different parts of its cultural offerings, complemented by art and wildlife. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can start by considering which of these topics will guide your visits.

Whaling history at the New Bedford Whaling Museum

A gallery at the New Bedford Whaling Museum traces the transformation from a small coastal village to a thriving city. It shows the role whaling played in this development and in connecting New Bedford to the world. The museum also houses the world’s largest collection of scrimshaw. The permanent exhibitions include The Lagoda, a half-scale model of a whaling ship. Together, these offerings take you from the city’s history to a specific example from its maritime collection.

Those who would like to explore the historic downtown on a guided tour can join free walking tours at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park. The tours go through the historic downtown; their schedules may change. So check the current dates before your visit.

Maritime heritage, fishing, and art

Seamen’s Bethel was founded in 1822 and served generations of sailors as a spiritual refuge. The pew where Herman Melville sat is marked and visible to visitors inside the church. The house and gardens of the Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum offer a different perspective on life in the city: they document 150 years of economic and social history, from 1834 to 1981, through the stories of the people who lived and worked on the property. The estate also includes an extensive rose garden.

The New Bedford Fishing Heritage Center preserves and shares the history of fishing in the past, present, and future through exhibitions, programs, and archives. The exhibition More than a Job: Work and Community in New Bedford’s Fishing Industry features a recreated work deck, a clam dredge, a kitchen table, bunks, historic images, and film footage. It also includes more than 60 audio recordings featuring voices from the fishing community. Exhibition details may change; if there are specific elements you’d like to see, check what’s currently on display before your visit.

The New Bedford Art Museum showcases works by local artists and community partners. In collaboration with the New Bedford Free Public Library, it also presents selections from the city’s historic art collection, as well as large-scale international solo and group exhibitions of innovative contemporary art. The public Enchanted Evenings series connects thematically to the current exhibitions and includes film, dance, poetry, and music. Program formats and dates may change; check in advance for the events that interest you.

Waterfront paths, a fort, and a zoo

Opened in 2015, HarborWalk is 3,880 feet long and runs along the New Bedford side of the hurricane barrier. It connects to a bike path along the waterfront that extends to the tip of the peninsula and historic Fort Taber Park. The same waterfront stretch thus features both a walking path and a connection to a bike path. The Fort Taber-Fort Rodman Military Museum and Veterans’ Memorial is located in Fort Taber Park at the southern tip of New Bedford and preserves and shares the city’s military history.

There’s also a convenient way to plan your trip to the Whaling Museum from the train: the museum is about a 20-minute walk from the Fall River/New Bedford MBTA Commuter Rail station. The route follows Purchase Street (Pleasant Street) and William Street. Since practical visitor information can change, check the route before setting out.

Founded in 1894, Buttonwood Park Zoo is home to more than 240 animal species. These include Asian elephants, red pandas, cougars, eagles, seals, otters, South American primates, and numerous waterfowl species. So, alongside maritime history, New Bedford also showcases wildlife from a range of groups.
