Southborough can be explored through its varied landscapes and trails, as well as its agricultural and historical heritage. Options range from a short loop behind the 911 Memorial athletic field to longer trails along the Sudbury Reservoir and regional routes. There are also woodlands, open fields and events that appeal to a range of interests in nature and culture.

Loops, Reservoir and Regional Trails

The 911 Loop Trail is a 1.2-mile loop behind the 911 Memorial athletic field. It is suitable for walking, trail running, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Pine Point is just off the main trail, where fishing and picnicking are possible. The same route therefore offers both exercise and a detour to a quieter spot to stop and relax.

The Sudbury Reservoir Trail runs approximately five miles west through Southborough to the border with Westborough. Historical markers commemorate the Burnett House and Southborough’s early settlers. There are also numerous good fishing spots along the trail. For a shorter route by the reservoir, the Southborough section of the Bay Circuit Trail offers a roughly 2.25-mile stretch along the water. Walking, trail running, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are all possible there.

Another short trail option is the Bay Circuit/Boroughs Loop Connector Trail: this 0.7-mile forest trail can be accessed at the intersection of Clemmons Street and Nichols Street in Southborough, where parking is available. On a larger scale, the 33-mile Boroughs Loop Trail connects the trail networks of Marlborough, Southborough, Westborough and Northborough. It links wooded hiking trails with bike paths, aqueduct trails and sidewalks. Hikers, walkers and runners are welcome on all sections. One section runs from Deerfoot Road in Southborough to Boundary Street in Marlborough/Northborough.

Forests, Fields and Winter Activities

Chestnut Hill Farm is one of the last working farms in Southborough. Visitors can explore its 131 acres of fields and pastures lined with stone walls. The Southborough Town Forest offers a different landscape across approximately 54.5 acres. Activities there include walking, trail running, walking dogs and snowshoeing. The “Explorin' the Forest Scavenger Hunt” is for all ages and invites participants to discover plants, animals and their habitats using their different senses.

Breakneck Hill Conservation Land covers 90 acres of gentle hills, grassy trails and expansive views. Its trails are open to the public for quiet recreation and walking dogs; in winter, they can also be used for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The Wilfred J. Turenne Wildlife Habitat features a relatively young, dry oak-hickory forest and granite outcrops. A demonstration planting of diverse native shrubs and trees provides habitat for native pollinators and birds.

Historical Heritage and Events

Fayville Village Hall was built in 1911 as a meeting hall for the Grand Army of the Republic, in honor of Civil War veterans. Following an extensive restoration, it became the new center for the humanities in Southborough and the surrounding communities. The historical markers along the Sudbury Reservoir Trail also add local history to the nature experience: they refer to the Burnett House and Southborough’s early settlers.

Events include Summer Nights, a celebration held in August featuring rides, activities for children, live entertainment and fireworks. Heritage Day is an annual tradition. Its program includes a parade, arts and crafts, food, games, pumpkin lighting, book sales and a 5K run. Southborough’s experiences thus range from trails and landscapes to community celebrations and places of cultural heritage.
