Accommodation in Pinconning
Pinconning is closely tied to the history of cheese. The town also hosts annual CheeseTown events and has natural areas nearby. When planning your trip, it’s worth noting the different highlights: the cheese history and festival are associated with the town, while Pinconning Park lies outside the city limits, directly on Saginaw Bay.
Cheese History and Local Specialties
William Reid founded the Pinconning Creamery in 1907. Later, Daniel Horn, who had moved from Wisconsin, developed a new Colby cheese. In Michigan, this cheese became known as Pinconning Cheese. The town’s history thus encompasses both the founding of a creamery and the development of a cheese variety known in Michigan as Pinconning Cheese.
In 1939, Inez and Lawrence Wilson took over a grocery store in Pinconning and specialized in cheese; this led to the creation of Wilson’s Cheese Shoppe. Visitors can enjoy specialties and samples there. The selection includes, among other things, meat and fish, gourmet sweets, and wines and spirits from Michigan. The shop thus combines the cheese tradition with other food and beverage categories.
Marie (née Horn) and Harry Bennett founded the Bennett Cheese Store in 1946; it officially opened in 1948. Another milestone in the town’s history followed in 1987: the Pinconning Cheese Store was transformed into the Pinconning Cheese Co. and Fudge Shoppe. The expanded selection at the time included fudge, custom-blended cheese spreads, jerky made in Michigan, freshwater fish, and various pickled specialties.
CheeseTown Festival and Races in June
The CheeseTown Festival and the CheeseTown Races take place every year in June in Pinconning. Both offer activities for the whole family. If you want to plan your trip around one of the events, check the specific dates in advance. This lets you plan for the right period without assuming a particular event day.
Sports Facilities and Nature Nearby
Doc Letchfield Park, also referred to as Doc Litchfield Park, is located in Pinconning. Its facilities include soccer fields, baseball fields, tennis courts, and a band shell. There is also a pavilion, a concession building, and batting cages. If you’re planning your visit around a particular facility, check its current condition in advance.
Outside the city limits, directly on Saginaw Bay, lies Pinconning Park. Visitors can fish, kayak, and watch birds there. Its waterfront location sets it apart from the sports facilities within Pinconning and makes it another nature option near the destination.
The Nayanquing Point State Wildlife Area is located in the wider region. The area is free and open to the public, and offers opportunities for wildlife and bird watching, hiking, fishing, trapping, and kayaking. Access rules and conditions for individual activities may change; check them before your visit.
The main differences to consider when choosing between the two natural destinations are their locations and activity profiles: Pinconning Park lies directly on Saginaw Bay and outside the city, while Nayanquing Point is in the wider region and also offers hiking and trapping.
