Coldwater offers a range of reasons to stay: historic architecture, a theater building, park recreation and steam locomotive rides each add their own distinctive touch. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide which of these themes you would like to focus on. The places differ not only in theme, but also in type: from a historic district to individual buildings and a museum, as well as park activities and a train ride.

City History and Historic Architecture

The Downtown Coldwater Local Historic District comprises approximately 130 properties, more than 80 percent of which have historic value. This draws attention to an entire district rather than a single building. The Historic Walking Tour is one way to view Coldwater’s historic architecture and designated historic buildings. The accompanying map identifies historic house locations and includes descriptions.

The Tibbits Opera House offers a different scale: built in 1882, it is one of the oldest theaters in Michigan. This makes it possible to compare the historic district with a single theater building whose date is clearly established. Another point of interest is the Capri Drive-In: it opened in the summer of 1964 and is located on US-12 immediately west of downtown Coldwater.

Festivals and Recreation

Coldwater’s annual Strawberry Festival brings together more than 200 vendors in the historic downtown. They sell food, drinks, arts and crafts, and strawberries. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the exact event dates in advance.

Heritage Park has a splash pad and a winding paved path. These are two distinct features of the same park: the water-play area and a path you can follow to explore the park. Adventure Zone expands the options with two 18-hole miniature golf courses and go-kart rides. Activities may change, so check the current offerings before your visit.

The Children’s Museum of Branch County has exhibit areas for discovery, learning and growth. It is located at 58 W. Chicago St. in downtown Coldwater. In addition to outdoor activities and historic buildings, the museum’s own exhibit areas offer another way to give your stay a particular focus.

Train Ride and Getting There

The Little River Railroad offers scenic rides on historic steam locomotives, with round trips departing from Coldwater. Unlike a walking tour or a visit to the park, the train ride itself is the main attraction. If it is a key part of your stay, check the current departure dates in advance.

For getting there, I-69 is a useful reference point: Coldwater is easily accessible via the interstate. When planning your stay, you can first consider how to get there, then decide on the focus you want—historic architecture, a festival, recreation or a train ride.
