History and outdoor activities give a stay in Mackinaw City different focuses. Colonial Michilimackinac and the Detweiler Log Cabin represent historical themes from different eras; at the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse, a tower visit and guided programs are part of the visitor experience. May Woods adds trails for year-round activities to this selection. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing seasonally limited programs from activities available year-round.

Fort and Archaeology at Colonial Michilimackinac

Colonial Michilimackinac is a reconstructed 18th-century fort and fur-trading village in Mackinaw City. Historical maps and archaeological excavations provided the basis for the reconstruction. The site thus combines the portrayal of a fort and fur-trading village with an archaeological perspective on the past.

From mid-June through the end of August, visitors can watch archaeological work daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., weather permitting. If you plan to observe the work, check the daily hours before your trip. In addition, Colonial Michilimackinac offers demonstrations and tours with costumed interpreters throughout the day; the schedule may vary by season.

Lighthouse and Lakeside Park

The Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse stands in Mackinaw City on the shore of Lake Michigan and within Michilimackinac State Park. Visitors can tour the tower; access rules and hours may change. A Fog Signal Whistle demonstration and the Castle on the Straits Walking Tour are each led by a historical interpreter. Check the daily hours and access rules before your visit if you plan to attend either program.

Parking at the lighthouse is free; the main parking lot is next to the entrance to the site, though parking rules may change. Michilimackinac State Park offers lakeside walks along Lake Huron and picnic areas in the shaded park. It is located two blocks north of downtown Mackinaw City. The lighthouse’s location on Lake Michigan and the walking opportunities along the shore of Lake Huron are distinct points of reference.

Trails Through Every Season at May Woods

May Woods in Mackinaw City has ten trails totaling more than 3.5 miles. You can hike, bike, snowshoe, and cross-country ski there year-round. The options include activities for different seasons: hiking and biking as well as snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

For choosing when to visit, the difference from the archaeological work at Colonial Michilimackinac is clear: observing that work is limited to mid-June through the end of August and depends on the weather, while the trails at May Woods are available year-round for the listed activities.

Historical Perspectives on Two Eras

The Detweiler Log Cabin recalls pioneer life, Mennonite heritage, and 19th-century log construction in northern Michigan. In a historical comparison, it has a different focus from Colonial Michilimackinac: the reconstructed fort and fur-trading village date from the 18th century, while the log cabin recalls the life and building methods of the 19th century.

A Historic Festival takes place at Heritage Village in August. If you would like to include the festival in your trip, check the current event calendar in advance.
