Nature and trails in Eaton

The Lake Interstate State Game Area in Eaton County covers about 123 acres. Crandell Park includes the largest lake in Eaton County, with an area of just under 160 acres. The landscape at Fitzgerald Park also has a distinctive geological character: The Ledges are ancient outcrops of sedimentary rock along the banks of the Grand River.

Fitzgerald Park has three miles of nature and hiking trails. This makes it a destination for anyone who wants to set aside time for walking during their trip. About 700 acres of public land are available for hunting in Eaton County. This figure provides an indication of the extent of public land; it does not refer to individual hunting areas.

Rivers and water activities

Several locations offer different ways to enjoy the waterways. Fitzgerald Park provides canoe and kayak access to the Grand River; visitors can also paddle on the Grand River in Eaton Rapids. Mill Pointe Park in Eaton Rapids has kayak-through channels. Butler Park offers public boat access to the Battle Creek River. Kayaks are available to rent at Crandell Park on a first-come, first-served basis. Availability may change, so check before your visit. Museums and history

The Eaton County Courthouse in Downtown Charlotte was built in 1885 in the Renaissance Revival style. Its top two floors are now home to a public museum: the Eaton County's Museum at Courthouse Square. The building brings historic architecture and a public museum together.

The Michigan's Grand Army of the Republic Memorial Hall & Museum is dedicated to the sacrifices of the “Boys in Blue” and the legacy of the Grand Army of the Republic. It is open on the first and third Saturdays of each month from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., as well as by appointment. Check visiting hours before you arrive. Another historic stop is Dyer Kiln Park, home to one of the first lime kilns in Eaton County. Historic Miller Farm houses one of the largest collections of Boy Scout memorabilia in the United States.

If your trip coincides with market or event season, you can include these dates in your plans. The Eaton Rapids Community Market takes place every Saturday from June through September. The Charlotte Artisans & Farmers Market is held seasonally on Thursdays from May through October. Dates and hours may change, so check the schedule in advance.

The Frontier Days Festival and Rodeo takes place annually in September in Downtown Charlotte; exact dates may vary. During the summer months, free family concerts are held at Island Park in Eaton Rapids.
