Discover Bemidji
Accommodation in Bemidji
Bemidji is located on Lake Bemidji. There are several different themes to consider for a stay: a statue overlooking the lake, fishing piers at the lake’s inlet, art in the city center, a summer theater, and various trails. A saltwater aquarium adds another distinct focus. For planning, you can choose among culture, lakeside attractions, summer theater, and winter sports. Consider these interests when choosing a hotel.
Bemidji on Lake Bemidji
A bronze statue honoring Chief Bemidji and the Anishinabe stands in Library Park, with a view over Lake Bemidji. Wheelchair-accessible fishing piers are located at the lake’s inlet near the city center. The two spots offer different ways to experience the lake: the statue highlights the dedication and lake view, while the piers are for fishing. It is also useful to distinguish their locations: Library Park is where the monument stands, while the fishing piers are at the inlet near the city center.
Art and theater in the city center
Since 1999, the Bemidji Sculpture Walk has showcased more than 25 sculptures throughout the city center. The free program changes annually, with new works added. Unlike the single monument in Library Park, this art attraction extends across the city center. The Paul Bunyan Playhouse offers a different cultural highlight: it is a professional, non-union summer theater company with a venue in the historic Chief Theater in downtown Bemidji. The difference is relevant for planning: the Playhouse is seasonal and geared toward summer, while the Sculpture Walk changes annually.
Ski trails and State Trail
The Montebello Ski Trail is a 4.2 km illuminated cross-country ski trail system in Bemidji’s City Park. Its length, lighting, and location in the park give the winter offering a distinct profile. In Bemidji, the Paul Bunyan State Trail follows short stretches of road; parking for the Bemidji section is available at the corner of Fifth Street and Gould Avenue by Lincoln Elementary School. The two trails can be distinguished in different ways: Montebello as an illuminated ski trail in the park, and the State Trail by its short stretches on roads and the named parking area.
A saltwater aquarium at the Science Center
The Headwaters Science Center has a 210-gallon saltwater aquarium. This adds a science focus that differs from the outdoor activities by the lake and on the trails. The aquarium and the fishing piers at the inlet offer different connections to water: a saltwater aquarium at the Science Center on the one hand, and fishing on Lake Bemidji on the other. This attraction can also be considered according to your interest in science or activities on the lake.
