Windom: Nature, Culture and Recreation
Accommodation in Windom
Windom offers a variety of ways to make the most of a stay: nature observation, architecture, county history and recreation. If you’re looking for a hotel in Windom, it helps to first consider which of these interests will shape your trip. The sites also differ in whether you’d like to explore nature, view buildings or take in the facilities of a recreational area.
Observe and discover nature
At the Wings on the Prairie Discovery Center, you can explore a nature trail, wildlife viewing platforms, informational signs and hands-on exhibits. The different offerings have distinct focuses: you can follow a trail, observe wildlife, read information or take part in an exhibit. Together, they provide several ways to engage with nature-related topics.
At the Windom Wetland Management District headquarters on the Wolf Lake Waterfowl Production Area in Windom, you can observe a local nesting pair of trumpeter swans. Wildlife sightings can vary, so plan to see them as a possibility rather than a guaranteed part of your itinerary. Unlike the Discovery Center, which offers several explicitly named forms of nature education, the focus here is on observing this nesting pair.
Architecture and county history
The Cottonwood County Courthouse stands on Windom’s central public square. Its east and west façades are adorned with monumental Corinthian porticoes. A domed tower topped by a statue of Lady Justice crowns the central section of the building. Both porticoes and the tower with its statue shape the courthouse’s architecture. If you’re interested in architectural design, you can look at these features separately: the colonnades on the façades and the striking feature crowning the central section.
The Cottonwood County Historical Society’s exhibit hall offers another way to explore the past. It covers the county’s history from the presence of Indigenous peoples through life in the 1940s. The society’s Remick Art Gallery displays work by local and regional artists. The exhibit and the gallery therefore have different focuses: the former centers on the county’s history, while the latter features art from the region. Check opening hours and access to the exhibit with the Historical Society before visiting; individual gallery exhibitions may change.
Recreation at the Windom Recreation Area
The Windom Recreation Area brings together a variety of sports and recreational facilities. These include softball, baseball and youth soccer fields, as well as tennis or pickleball courts. Kastle Kingdom is the facility’s play area; there is also a skate park and a sledding hill. The options range from team sports facilities to play and skate areas to a place for sledding. Which of these facilities interests you will depend on the activity you’d like to focus on during your stay.
The Windom Recreation Area also has 1.35 miles of paved paths for walking and biking. Alongside the sports fields and individual recreation areas, these paths provide space for getting around on foot or by bike. Their length and paved surface set them apart from facilities for specific sports: you can use the paths for walking or biking, while the fields and courts are designated for particular activities. Check current path conditions on site before including them in your plans.
