If you’re looking for a hotel in Rock, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: prairie trails, local history, or cultural attractions. The destinations offer different experiences, making it easier to include them in your travel plans in a way that suits you.

Prairie, Quartzite Cliffs, and Trails

Blue Mounds State Park protects steep quartzite cliffs and more than 1,500 acres of diverse prairie. In this prairie landscape, the park also offers 13 miles of easy to moderate hiking trails. If you’re considering a longer route between a town and the park, the 6.0-mile Blue Mounds Hiking and Biking Trail runs from Main Street in Luverne to the state park.

Other trails differ in route and length. The 7.4-mile Luverne Loop runs around the edge of Luverne. The Ashby Trail is 1.95 miles long, crosses the Rock River, passes through Luverne City Park, and follows Rock River Road east out of Luverne. For a direct comparison of trail lengths, the Ashby Trail and Luverne Loop offer two distinctly different distances. Climbing is also an option at Blue Mounds State Park, where there are numerous established routes of varying difficulty.

Theater and Culture in Luverne

The Palace Theatre in Luverne opened in 1915 and has 450 seats. Its past offerings included films, vaudeville, and touring companies. Today, the Historic Palace Theatre hosts a variety of musical performances year-round. Its theater history and music program offer two different ways to enjoy a cultural stay.

The Herreid Military Museum displays the uniform, flight jacket, helmet, flight goggles, and boots of Quentin Aanenson, a P-47 pilot in World War II. Admission is free; the museum is open to the public Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Local History and Memorial Sites

The Rock County History Center features exhibits about early life in Rock County and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Hinkly House in Luverne also offers a connection to regional architectural history: this preserved and restored Victorian-era house was built in 1892.

The One Room School House on the Rock County Fairgrounds is a replica of the original District 1 schoolhouse. The Ordung Building displays agricultural tools and machinery used by early settlers. The collection also includes two early fire engines from Luverne Fire Apparatus. The Rock County Veterans Memorial honors soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen from Rock County who lost their lives in military service.

At Courthouse Square in Luverne, the Brandenburg Gallery presents award-winning nature photography by Jim Brandenburg. Here, nature is represented not by a landscape trail, but through photography. Together, the exhibition venues, historic buildings, and memorials offer complementary experiences without sharing the same focus.

Winter Activities and a Break at the Taproom

During the winter months, Blue Mound Ice Arena is used for Luverne Cardinals games, Blue Mound Figure Skaters, public skating, figure skating lessons, and other special activities. The program may change, so if skating or a particular event is important to your plans, check the latest schedule in advance.

The taproom at Take 16 Brewing Company offers pizza, light snacks, ice cream, lemonade, and house-made Rock River Root Beer. This gives you specific food and drink options to consider alongside trails and cultural attractions during your stay.

When planning your trip, you can compare trail lengths with museum opening hours and the seasonal winter program. This helps you choose a focus that suits your trip, after which you can search for hotels in Rock.
