Corinth in Alcorn County offers a trip that brings together Civil War history, museums, and the city’s development. If you’re looking for a hotel for your stay, you can decide on your focus in advance: Would you like to learn about the Siege and Battle of Corinth, discover the history of the Contraband Camp, or explore the city’s cultural and industrial history? In Corinth, these interests lead to different historic sites and collections.

Civil War and Historic Landscapes

The Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center is a facility of Shiloh National Military Park and is located at the historic site of Battery Robinett. Covering approximately 15,000 square feet, it features interactive exhibits, videos, and artifacts about the Siege and Battle of Corinth. The exhibits focus on the city’s military history.

The Corinth Contraband Camp tells a different story: What began as a temporary tent city grew into a larger settlement with a church, commissary, hospital, homes, and a network of streets. The camp was founded by the Union Army and is preserved by the National Park Service. Visitors can walk along a path about a quarter of a mile long around the site. Statues there depict the lives of the people who lived in the camp.

The Beauregard Line consists of seven miles of earthworks and trenches along the city’s eastern, southern, and western boundaries. Driving tours, walking tours, and interpretive signs lead to Civil War sites and the city’s two historic districts. The Corinth Historic Driving Tour includes 22 stops at historic sites and fortifications associated with the Civil War.

Museums and City History

The Crossroads Museum and the Historic Corinth Depot in downtown tell the story of Corinth through permanent exhibits and professionally designed displays. The Crossroads Museum also displays thousands of artifacts related to the city’s cultural and industrial history. The Northeast Mississippi Museum houses Civil War artifacts and historic images.

The Corinth Coke Museum preserves more than 110 years of history of the Corinth Coca-Cola Bottling Group. Its holdings include authentic Coca-Cola memorabilia and historic soda machines. This collection offers a different focus from the Civil War exhibits, drawing attention to local business and beverage history.

Architecture, Railroad, and Theater History

Corinth was established in 1855 at the junction of the Memphis & Charleston and Mobile & Ohio railroads. The Verandah-Curlee House was built in 1857 for Hamilton Mask, one of the city’s founders. During the Civil War, the house served as headquarters for Generals Braxton Bragg, H.W. Halleck, and John B. Hood. The house’s history therefore brings together the city’s early development and the war years.

Corinth Theatre-Arts has hosted musicals, dramas, and comedies throughout its history.
