El Dorado Springs combines its history with a spring and offers travelers several points of interest: Downtown Park, the Annual Picnic, the Wayside Inn Museum, and various recreational and sports facilities. Its attractions range from the town’s origins to a recurring cultural event in July. You can plan your stay around history, events, or sports interests.

The Spring and the Town’s History

El Dorado Springs was founded because of a spring that was believed to have healing properties. Historically, spas and bathhouses flourished in the town because of the spring water. Several acres of land around the spring in the heart of downtown were set aside as a park. Downtown Park is a public city park, and water from the spring still flows into its basin. The spring is therefore reflected not only in the town’s history but also in a specific feature of the park.

Cultural Events and Exhibits

The Annual Picnic takes place every July on the weekend closest to July 20 and is held in the town center. The Picnic is said to have begun in 1882 and has been held every year since the first Picnic. The program includes a large fair, as well as local and out-of-town vendors selling food and other goods. The town band plays every evening during the Annual Picnic. Dates and programming can change from year to year; check the latest information for your travel year.

The Wayside Inn Museum offers a different focus from the event: it has ten rooms and two halls with historical exhibits. El Dorado Springs thus features both an annual event with a market and evening music and a museum with an extensive exhibition space devoted to history.

Parks and Recreation

Downtown Park combines the spring basin with other facilities. These include a municipal bandstand, a fishpond, several picnic shelters, barbecue grills, and playground equipment. A natural amphitheater is also located at the eastern end of the park, near the bandstand. These features give an overview of the park’s varied amenities: the water basin and pond are complemented by picnic facilities and an outdoor event venue.

Lucien Carter Ball Park stands out for its sports facilities. It has three lighted baseball fields, an unlighted T-ball field, and two lighted basketball courts. Amenities also include a concession stand, a picnic shelter, and modern playground equipment. The fields and courts offer a different focus from the combination of spring, pond, and amphitheater at Downtown Park.

The Civic Center gymnasium has its own profile: it is used for basketball, dodgeball, volleyball, various events, and junior high events. It is also marked for three regulation pickleball courts. A comparison of the sports facilities reveals different features for outdoor amenities and indoor use, without conflating their respective offerings.

Golf and Swimming Pool

Gene Pray Memorial Golf Course is a public nine-hole golf course. A limited number of tournaments and several leagues are held there each year. Since schedules and participation details can change, it’s a good idea to check the dates before planning to take part.

Virginia Ryan Strain Swimming Pool is located at 110 S Jackson. If you’re planning a visit, check in advance whether the pool is open during your travel dates.
