Discover Jefferson City: Capitol, History and Nature
Accommodation in Jefferson City
Jefferson City offers a range of travel experiences, including Missouri history, art and museums, as well as trails and wildlife viewing. When choosing a hotel in Jefferson City, you can plan your stay around the places you want to visit. Guided tours require advance reservations; some individual sites also have specific visiting hours or a temporary closure schedule.
The Capitol and Guided Tours
The Missouri State Capitol features stained-glass windows, murals, carvings and sculptures depicting Missouri’s history, legends and cultural achievements. The House Lounge is home to Thomas Hart Benton’s mural “Social History of Missouri.” The Missouri State Museum offers free, year-round tours of the Capitol. Tours are not offered on New Year’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas, or on the holidays observed in lieu of those holidays. Reservations must be made at least 24 hours in advance; check the schedule before you travel.
The Missouri Governor’s Mansion has been the official residence of Missouri’s governors since 1872. All visitors must reserve at least 48 hours in advance for its free tours. If you plan to visit both guided-tour sites, allow for their different lead times: at least 24 hours for the Capitol and 48 hours for the Mansion.
Historic Sites and Museums
Jefferson Landing State Historic Site includes the 1839 Lohman Building and the 1855 Union Hotel, which is closed for renovations. The Lohman Building houses the interactive exhibit “Jefferson Landing: Witness to History,” added in 2023. The entire Historic Site is scheduled to close from June 1 to October 16, 2026; the Missouri State Capitol and Missouri State Museum will remain open during this time. If your visit falls within this period, check the latest information before planning.
The Lewis and Clark KATY Trailhead Plaza near the Missouri State Capitol commemorates the expedition’s camp in the area on June 4, 1804. The Missouri State Penitentiary housed inmates for 168 years and was decommissioned in 2004. The Missouri State Penitentiary Museum displays prison memorabilia and a recreated cell that illustrates the conditions there.
The Museum of Missouri Military History displays artifacts dating from the American Revolutionary War to the present day. Its outdoor exhibits include an F-15 Eagle, an F-4 Phantom II, a Sherman tank, a Sheridan tank and a C-130 Hercules. Adults must show identification at the main entrance when visiting. Jefferson City National Cemetery is open to visitors daily from sunrise to sunset. A monument there marks the gravesite of 118 buried men.
Art, Nature and Trails
Capital Arts hosts nine exhibitions each year featuring works by local artists. It also offers classes, workshops and holiday programs covering a range of artistic techniques. The pottery studio offers classes in wheel throwing and hand-building ceramics. If you have a particular class in mind, check the current schedule, as class offerings may change.
Runge Conservation Nature Center offers public programs, live animal exhibits, a large fish aquarium and a wildlife viewing area. Katy Trail State Park offers recreational opportunities for cyclists, walkers, horseback riders, nature lovers and history enthusiasts. Katy Spur connects North Jefferson Trailhead to the Katy Trail, runs one mile south and ends at a pavilion. For exercise, you can choose from different options: a trail with a specified length and endpoint, or the broader recreational area of Katy Trail State Park.
The Jefferson City Greenway Skywalk Trail crosses the Missouri River. From Carl R. Noren Access, you can reach the KATY hiking and biking trail. Cyclists can also use the Missouri River Pedestrian/Bike Bridge to cross the Missouri River safely, without vehicle traffic. These options offer different ways to enjoy your trip, from cycling and walking to wildlife viewing.
