Kinloch: History, Community and Aviation
Accommodation in Kinloch
Kinloch is the oldest African American community incorporated in the state of Missouri. On August 20, 1948, it was incorporated as Missouri’s first African American fourth-class city. For your trip planning, its history offers various perspectives: from schools and community institutions to aviation and public art in Kinloch Park.
Urban Development and Change
Kinloch Park was developed as a commuter suburb in the 1890s. The Wabash Railroad ran from downtown St. Louis through the Kinloch area and helped spur development by White people. This information links the suburb’s development to a specific transportation route while also noting that White people shaped that development.
A later change followed in the 1980s: property acquisitions by the City of St. Louis as part of the expansion of Lambert-Saint Louis International Airport significantly reduced Kinloch’s size. The town’s history thus encompasses both its development as a suburb and a major change in its size.
Schools and Community Life
The history of the schools reflects different time periods. The wooden, one-room Vernon School opened for Black children in 1885 and closed again a few months later. The building in the Ferguson District continued to be used as a school for Black children until 1967. In this history, the brief initial period of operation and the building’s later use are two distinct timeframes.
Dunbar Elementary School opened in 1914 and operated until 1975. Kinloch High School opened in 1937. In between, Holy Angels Elementary School opened in 1931; it is now Our Lady of the Angels and served students from Kinloch. Together, these institutions trace the history of education across several decades and schools.
The history of the churches can also be traced through names and dates. First Missionary Baptist Church of Kinloch was founded in 1901; its congregation is now in Black Jack, Missouri. First United Methodist Church followed in 1904. Second Missionary Baptist Church was founded in 1914 and was located at 5508 Lyons. Kinloch Church of God in Christ was also founded in 1914 and is now called Tabernacle of Faith and Deliverance. Our Lady of the Angels, originally Holy Angels, was established in Kinloch in the early 1920s.
Holy Angels Elementary School and the parish’s history mark further milestones associated with this name. The second church building of Holy Angels / Our Lady of the Angels at 8122 Scott Avenue was built in 1952. The parish in Kinloch is permanently closed; it closed in 2002. Thus, founding dates, later names, and the closure belong to different chapters of local history.
Aviation History of Kinloch Field
Kinloch Field, also known as Kinloch Park Grounds, is associated with several events in aviation history. President Theodore Roosevelt took his first airplane ride there in 1910. In 1912, the first successful parachute jump from an airplane took place at the field. Kinloch Field was later converted into what is now St. Louis Lambert International Airport.
Art and Sports in Kinloch Park
Another specific landmark is William LaChance’s mural at the basketball courts in Kinloch Park. Architectural Digest called it the world’s best-designed basketball court. The basketball court is a 100 × 150-foot abstract Cubist work of art. In this way, artistic design meets a place whose history has also been shaped by sporting use.
Historically, weekend games and 3-on-3 tournaments were held at the basketball court. These past uses add a sporting perspective to the history of the art, without conflating the different aspects of the place.
