Vaughn brings together the Sun River, equestrian sports, and ranch history. The river flows through town on its way to the Missouri, while the 406 Arena brings together several equestrian facilities. The Robert Vaughn Homestead/Captain Couch Ranch illustrates the development of the Sun River Valley. For planning your trip, this offers clearly distinct themes: activities on the water, equestrian facilities, and the history of the region.

River and Getting Around

Vaughn is located on Highway 89 and I-15. The Sun River flows through town and onward to the Missouri. Vaughn offers access to numerous public fishing spots and areas for river trips. Fishing and river trips are two different ways to incorporate the river into your trip planning: one leads to public fishing spots, the other to areas for trips on the water. This lets you consider the river activities based on what interests you, while the town’s location on the two highways provides another geographic reference point.

Equestrian Sports at the 406 Arena

The 406 Arena centers on a range of equestrian facilities. The main building covers 1.4 acres and houses three separate riding arenas and 32 large stalls. The large arena measures 110 Ă— 205 and is suitable for ranch roping, horse shows, clinics, barrel racing, team roping, show jumping, and open riding. Alongside ranch and team events, show jumping and open riding are also among the listed uses. Specific programs and their availability may change.

Another area is the outdoor trail course. The first phase of construction was completed in fall 2024 and includes a pond, four different types of bridges, embankments, steps, logs, rails, and an obstacle called the Texas Two Step. Obstacle layouts may change as construction continues. The property also has trails, some of which run along the Sun River, as well as other designated riding areas. Confirm current trail availability before visiting.

Ranch History and Town Development

The Robert Vaughn Homestead/Captain Couch Ranch illustrates the discovery, conquest, and agricultural development of Montana’s Sun River Valley. The town’s origins are also tied to settlement history: the settlement of Vaughn led to the founding of the town of Vaughn a few years later. These historical connections shed light on both the development of the Sun River Valley and the later founding of the town.

Summer Hunting Safaris

Montana Safaris offers fully guided, eight- or nine-day hunting safaris in summer. Horses and mules are used, and the tours involve searching for elk, deer, or bears in unspoiled wilderness. The two durations differ by one day and help you gauge the time commitment for this multi-day activity. Confirm that the offering is currently available before booking.
