Anaconda brings together golf, a multi-use trail, and industrial history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Anaconda, the activities you’d like to enjoy can be a helpful starting point for planning your trip. The city lies in a valley at an elevation of about one mile in the Deer Lodge National Forest. You can choose from outdoor activities as well as cultural and historical attractions.

Golf Course and Copper Link Trail

Old Works Golf Course is a public 18-hole, par-72 course. Its bunkers contain black slag from the copper-smelting process. This detail connects the course to a material from Anaconda’s industrial history. Since its operating status may change, check whether the course is currently open before making plans.

The Copper Link Trail runs over the hills above the southern edge of town, connecting “A” Hill with “C” Hill. It is about 2.8 miles long and classified as a green, beginner-friendly trail. At the same time, it has short, challenging climbs. Keep both details in mind when planning: the classification does not eliminate these challenging sections. The trail is designated as a non-motorized multi-use trail for hikers, runners, mountain bikers, Class 1 e-bikes, and horseback riders.

The golf course and trail therefore offer different kinds of activities: the course centers on 18 holes of golf, while the trail accommodates several types of non-motorized users. When planning your time outdoors, you can compare these options based on the kinds of activities you’d like to include.

Industrial History and the Smoke Stack

Anaconda Smoke Stack State Park is home to a former chimney of the Anaconda Copper Company. Completed in 1919, it stands 585 feet tall. It can only be viewed and photographed from a distance. The overlook near Goodman Park has interpretive panels about the Smoke Stack’s history.

From 1884 to 1902, the Old Works area was the original site of the first copper smelting facilities built in Anaconda. Ores from Butte were processed there. These dates place the area within the early history of copper processing in Anaconda.

Museum and Historic City Tours

Copper Village Museum and Arts Center is a free museum in the Anaconda City Hall Cultural Center. This makes it easy to include a museum visit as a separate activity in your plans for the city.

Anaconda Historic Bus Tours travel through historic Anaconda and include the Washoe Theater and other historic buildings. Unlike a museum visit, the tour connects several stops on a sightseeing trip through the city. If you’re planning a bus tour, check the current tour dates in advance.

For a stay focused on industrial history, there are several places to visit: the Smoke Stack, viewed from a distance; the interpretive panels at the overlook; the historic Old Works area; and the museum and city tour. Along with the golf course and trail, these offer different ways to tailor your stay in Anaconda to your interests.
