Hungry Horse offers everything from a dam and reservoir landscape to hiking areas and a Harvest Festival with a specific date. If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Hungry Horse, you can first plan your stay around the occasion: hiking, activities at the reservoir, a trip to the dam, or the Harvest Festival each offer a different focus. The town lies on the edge of the lake created by Hungry Horse Dam and near the west entrance to Glacier National Park.

Dam and Reservoir: Scenery and Planning

Hungry Horse Dam was completed in 1953 and is 564 feet tall. The Hungry Horse Reservoir created by the dam is about 34 miles long, covers an area of 23,800 acres, and is surrounded by more than 25 mountain peaks. Its length and area describe different dimensions of the body of water; the surrounding peaks add to the scenic setting.

The reservoir offers opportunities for fishing, boating, water skiing, and swimming. Seasonal conditions can affect when these activities are available. The waters are home to cutthroat trout, bull trout, and whitefish. When planning, you can therefore distinguish between the permanent landscape features and seasonal recreational opportunities.

From U.S. Highway 2, you can reach Hungry Horse Dam via Hungry Horse Dam Road; it’s about 4.5 miles to the north end of the dam. Check road conditions before driving. In summer 2026, the visitor center at the dam was closed, while the dam crest remained open to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

Hiking Areas and Choosing a Route

Jewel Basin is an area designated exclusively for hikers, covering 15,349 acres, with 27 lakes and 35 miles of trails. The use of pack animals and motorized and mechanized use are prohibited within its boundaries. The area can be reached via west-side Hungry Horse Reservoir Road 895; road conditions may vary. Its area, lakes, and trail length give a concrete sense of the scale of this hiking area.

Doris Ridge Trail #52 is 2.5 miles each way. It runs through the Doris Lakes Basin and then connects with Alpine Trail 7. From Hungry Horse, access is via west-side Reservoir Road 895 and Beta Creek Road 895. Expect a very rough road; check road conditions before driving.

The two hiking options offer different planning scales: Jewel Basin is about a large area and trail network, while Doris Ridge Trail is a route with a stated one-way length that connects to another trail. This lets you match the type of hike planning to the reason for your trip, rather than simply comparing trail lengths.

Harvest Festival and Local Sweets

If a specific date determines your trip, the Hungry Horse Harvest Festival is scheduled for Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Canyon Elementary School. The 2026 program includes a chili cook-off and a cornbread contest. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the date before you travel; future editions may have a different program.

The Huckleberry Patch shop in Hungry Horse sells fresh huckleberry pies and other sweets. This gives you a specific local product to include in your travel plans, alongside the hiking and reservoir options.
